Best Hip Hop Albums Of 2024 – Honorable Mentions

Best Hip Hop Albums Of 2024 – Honorable Mentions

We sift through a mountain of Hip Hop from 2024 to create our top 60 albums list, but that leaves some strong projects waiting in the wings. Enter our “Best Hip Hop Albums of 2024: Honorable Mentions.” These albums may have missed the top tier but there are plenty on this list that deserve a place in your headphones. From classic boom-bap to underground and from genre-bending experiments to more mainstream sounds, this collection offers something for every Hip Hop fan. Dive in and discover hidden gems you might have missed – you won’t be disappointed.

Here’s what almost made our best-of list, presented in order of release:

Josiah the Gift & Bishop - Lavish Language

This album’s exposure may suffer from a poor roll-out strategy, which is unfortunate because Josiah the Gift delivers skill and passion as always. His rhymes and flow are impressive, and Bishop’s beats are equally dope. A notable plus is that Lavish Language has a reasonable runtime of 43 minutes. Don’t skip this one if atmospheric underground Hip Hop is your thing—if you can find it.

Release date: August 30, 2024.

K.A.A.N. & DJ Hoppa - In Due Time

K.A.A.N. and DJ Hoppa’s Delusions of Grandeur dropped a few months ago and would have made this list if it were over 30 minutes. However, since it’s under 30 minutes, we consider it an EP. In Due Time, which clocks in at just over 30 minutes, deserves a mention here. It’s one of the better projects in K.A.A.N.’s extensive catalog. Known for experimenting with different styles, K.A.A.N. shines best with boom-bap-centered production, as showcased in this project. In Due Time is a strong listen.

Release date: August 30, 2024.

Big Sean - Better Me Than You

We’ve never been big fans of Big Sean, often finding his music mediocre at best. Better Me Than You doesn’t change our minds, but it isn’t a bad album by mainstream rap standards. While its 66-minute runtime can feel inconsistent, the album as a whole is not bad. Big Sean continues to do what he does best: create middle-of-the-road rap music that appeals to a broad audience. Though it will not convert skeptics, no doubt there’s an audience for his style.

Release date: August 30, 2024.

LEX Nyre - John

John is the second installment in LEX’s self series and the follow-up to 2018’s Alex. This project features melodic live instrumentation blended with 90s-centric beats and mature, listen-worthy rhymes, making it a dope project you will not regret giving a chance.

Release date: August 30, 2024.

Curren$y & DJ Fresh - The Tonite Show The Sequel

In DJ Fresh’s The Tonite Show series, The Sequel marks his second collaboration with the consistently strong Curren$y. As always, Spitta delivers strong performances, and guest appearances from Dej Loaf, T.F., Larry June, Paul Wall, Payroll Giovanni, ALLBLACK, G Style, The Musalini, Kamaiyah, and Jade Angelle add extra flavor. While the album might not be especially memorable musically, it is a solid listen overall.

Release date: August 30, 2024.

Eligh & ES.CE - Hello Youth

Hello Youth is a solid album from Los Angeles underground stalwart Eligh. Featuring guest appearances from Blu, Guilty Simpson, Tha God Fahim, Abstract Rude, Del the Funky Homosapien, and Fashawn, the album offers inspired bars throughout. While Eligh’s production is competent, it lacks the standout qualities needed to elevate the project to the next level. Despite this, there’s nothing wrong with the album, and it is a perfectly fine addition to Eligh’s discography.

Release date: August 28, 2024.

Juicy J - Ravenite Social Club

Memphis rapper and producer Juicy J’s eighth solo LP, Ravenite Social Club is a nice surprise. Known for co-founding Three 6 Mafia, Juicy J’s solo career has seen success with albums like Stay Trippy and Rubba Band Business. His recent works, Mental Trillness, and its sequel, adopted a more serious tone, coping with Gangsta Boo’s passing. Ravenite Social Club continues this trend, going for a jazz-rap vibe with production from JR Swiftz, Robert Glasper, and Juicy J himself. Tracks like “The Higher Ups” and “Don’t Go Out” feature jazz boom bap, while others like “Consequence” and “Payment” mix pianos with synths. This mature, introspective album is a standout in Juicy J’s solo discography.

Release date: August 27, 2024.

Spice Programmers - Transatlantic Shit 2

Spice Programmers, a production crew from France, delivers a kick-ass project with Transatlantic Shit 2. The album, nearly an hour long, features dope beats and rhymes, with most songs around the two-minute mark, creating a collage of vignettes that works remarkably well.

Featuring contributions from Edo G, Guilty Simpson, Planet Asia, Declaime, MED, Chuck Strangers, AJ Suede, Hus Kingpin, Phat Kat, Blu, Cashus King, Musoni, Days, Mike Ladd, UllNevaNo, Newman, Unruly, Dero, Illus, DJ Johnny Juice, Sleep Sinatra, DJ Enjay, Tommy Choppa, Tune B, Solute, Apoc, New Villain, YaH-Ra, Unorthodocks, The Musalini, and Silent Snipers, the album showcases an impressive array of talent over banging boom-bap beats, making for a great hour of Hip Hop music.

Release date: August 26, 2024.

X-Raided - A Sin In Heaven

X-Raided’s 18th full-length studio LP, A Sin in Heaven, marks his sophomore effort with Tech N9ne’s Strange Music. The Sacramento veteran, who debuted in 1992 with Psycho Active, served 31 years in prison before being paroled in 2018. Signing with Strange Music in 2022, his previous release A Prayer in Hell was a return to form. This latest album continues that trajectory, blending trap, gospel, and boom-bap. With features from Tech N9ne, Ras Kass, Locksmith, KXNG CROOKED, and others, X-Raided delivers a powerful and introspective project, displaying his evolution and resilience.

Release date: August 23, 2024.

Rockness Monsta & Ruste Juxx - Crownsville

Brooklyn emcees Rock and Ruste Juxx have joined forces for Crownsville, a tribute to their late friend Sean Price. Rock, a veteran from Boot Camp Clik and Heltah Skeltah, and Ruste Juxx, once a protégé of Sean Price, deliver a powerful LP that reflects their long history and Sean’s influence.

The album opens with the title track, a gritty boom-bap nod to Brownsville and Crown Heights. “Black Out” brings a soulful vibe, proudly showcasing their Brooklyn roots. Vinny Idol’s production on “Vehicular Manslaughter” lays down hard-hitting beats, while “Crash Ya Whip” offers a fierce, no-holds-barred anthem. The heartfelt “Sean Lives On” features a haunting beat that honors Sean Price’s memory.

“B-83” introduces a trap vibe, and “Ruck Down,” with production from Bumpy Knuckles, blends rap and rock influences. “Change Nothing” sees Rock, Ruste Juxx, Frankie Storm, and 9th Uno urging listeners to stay true. “Dust Pan” highlights their dynamic chemistry, and “Kings County” draws inspiration from rock music, celebrating their Brooklyn roots.

The album closes with “Wotcha Call Strength,” a high-energy reunion of the Boot Camp Clik since 2007. Featuring guests like Smif-N-Wessun, O.G.C., and Buckshot, Crownsville is a fitting homage to Sean Price and a display of Rock and Ruste Juxx’s robust partnership, enriched by boom bap beats, trap elements, and rock and soul influences.

Release date: August 23, 2024.

Mickey Diamond - It's Five O'Clock Somewhere

Mickey Diamond never disappoints, and his second full-length of the year is no exception. While we prefer Super Shredder, this album is dope as f too. Unlike Super Shredder, this project features a variety of producers, with Big Ghost Ltd being the most prominent. The diverse production creates a dynamic backdrop for Mickey’s captivating flow and lyrics. This album is a strong addition to his underrated catalog, offering more proof of his consistent talent and versatility.

Release date: August 22, 2024.

Hahyeem & Karbine - Far From Home 2: The Awakening

Screenshot

Hahyeem and Karbine’s Far from Home 2: The Awakening is a must-listen for fans of 90s-centric boom-bap. With beats reminiscent of Pete Rock or Lord Finesse’s 1990s work and solid wordplay to match, this project is a treat for traditional Hip Hop enthusiasts.

Release date: August 22, 2024.

Omen 44 - Year Of The Dragon

OMEN44’s Year Of The Dragon marks an evolution in his sound, blending electro and drum’n’bass with his signature jazzy Hip Hop. The album showcases a new side of OMEN44 and features an impressive lineup of guest performers including Kool Keith, Tragedy Khadafi, Craig G, Boot Camp Click, and reggae artist Richie Spice. Collaborations with DJ Munari, Gradis Nice, BudaMunk, and French producer Kyo Itachi add to its allure. This experimental piece is a must-listen for fans of old-school Hip Hop and electro.

Release date: August 16, 2024.

PONYC - The C Is Silent

PONYC’s The C Is Silent is a solid showcase of lyrical dexterity and authentic Hip Hop expression. This ensemble of nine emcees from across New York, led by producer and emcee Din Cooks, delivers a dynamic soundscape that recalls the synergy of collectives like the Wu-Tang Clan. Contributions from Grammy-winning songwriter Mickey Factz and emcee Eloh add depth to the album. While the project may not break new ground, it’s a commendable effort that offers a diverse and engaging listening experience.

Release date: August 16, 2024.

Grim Moses & ArtLords - LORDINI

Arizona rapper Grim Moses explores vanishing, reappearing, death, and resurrection themes in his latest LP, Lordini. The album, titled after a fusion of a famous magician and divinity, reflects Moses’ journey of renewal. With a history of music dating back to 2017, Lordini stands out for its clear vision and thematic focus. Tracks like “Handcuff Escape” and “Paper Magic” are metaphors for his struggles and triumphs. The poignant “I Thought You Knew” recounts his past homelessness and rise from adversity. Featuring rich, moody production from Al Wonder, DJ Benoit, and Thelonious Coltrane, Lordini is a compelling reemergence.

Release date: August 14, 2024.

JUNECINEMA - PERSEVERANCE

PERSEVERANCE by JUNECINEMA, the duo of JUNE! and Jay Cinema, delivers an engaging contrast in styles that will keep listeners hooked from start to finish. JUNE!’s deep, raspy tone pairs intriguingly with Jay’s energetic and nimble flow, creating a dynamic exchange that makes each track feel alive. The slightly left-field production, crafted by Chow, Reggie the Father, and others, complements their verses with a nostalgic but simultaneously fresh sound. PERSEVERANCE is a confident and captivating album that shows the duo’s potential to become major players in Hip Hop.

Release date: August 13, 2024.

Jae Skeese - Ground Level

Jae Skeese’s Testament of the Times set a high bar earlier this year, and while Ground Level leans more into a trap direction, it still delivers. This album mixes boom-bap-flavored cuts with trap-tinged beats. We favor the boom-bap style, so we slightly prefer his previous work, but Ground Level is a solid enough record. It offers plenty for Hip Hop fans to enjoy, showing off Jae Skeese’s versatility and appeal to a broad audience.

Release date: August 13, 2024.

Larry June - Doing It for Me

Doing It for Me is a solid but unremarkable entry in Larry June’s catalog. He sticks to his usual laid-back beats and smooth rhymes, but this time, it lacks the punch that makes his best work stand out. After his excellent collaboration with The Alchemist on The Great Escape in 2023, which displayed his potential at its peak, this album feels like a step back to some of his pre-The Great Escape output. It’s more of the same, right down to the familiar album cover style. It’s alright but Doing It for Me doesn’t reach the heights we know Larry June is capable of.

Release date: August 9, 2024.

OldBoy Rhymes - The Sane Asylum

Alaska-born and third-world-raised, OldBoy Rhymes debuts on Sage Francis’ Strange Famous Records with The Sane Asylum. This album, produced entirely by Mopes (formerly Prolyphic), tackles personal, political, and social issues with grizzled vocals and a flow heavy with multis and content.

The opening track, “What’s Hard?”, is a guitar-driven autobiographical rap filled with literary references. “American Pyramids” features Sage Francis and Mr. Lif, likening the American currency structure to a pyramid scheme. “Strange Kids” has a melancholy, bluesy production and relatable rhymes about school dynamics, while “Lose You” is a posse cut with Lee Reed, Black Liq, Deuce Eclipse, and Mopes.

Other standout tracks include “Somehow” with Brother Ali, the satirical “Smiley Pills”, and the war-themed “War” featuring Locksmith. Despite its numerous guest features, which at times overshadow OldBoy, The Sane Asylum is a strong debut filled with intriguing concepts and solid production.

Release date: August 9, 2024.

BP Infinite - Kill Or Be Killed

Kill or Be Killed is a solid but somewhat middle-of-the-road producer’s album. BP Infinite delivers beats that get the job done, and the lineup of emcees is impressive, with names like Redman, RJ Payne, Skyzoo, Tragedy Khadafi, Nature, Elucid, Eddie Kaine, Shabaam Sahdeeq, Cory Gunz, and Elzhi among the most prominent.

One of the standout moments is the title track, “Kill or Be Killed,” where RJ Payne and Skyzoo deliver snarling raps over a menacing beat, with DJ Stitches adding his signature scratches to the hook. It’s a track that embodies the aggressive, take-no-prisoners vibe of the entire project. Then there’s “Kill Squad,” featuring Redman, where Stitches again complements the raucous energy with his cuts, making it one of the more memorable tracks on the album.

One challenge with producer albums featuring 20+ guests is that they can often feel like compilations. However, BP Infinite’s instrumentals provide enough consistency to give the album a cohesive feel. While some guests outshine others, the overall result is solid. Listeners may pick a few standout tracks for their playlists and move on, but the album is worth a couple of spins.

Release date: August 9, 2024.

Monday Night & GRiMM Doza - Thank You, 'Preciate It

Monday Night and GRiMM Doza’s Thank You, ‘Preciate It delivers enjoyable atmospheric underground Hip Hop with solid beats and flows. The downside is that many projects these days offer similar production and bars, all around the 30-minute mark, making it difficult to stand out. While this project may blend into the crowd, it’s still worth a listen or two.

Release date: August 11, 2024.

Kanye West & Ty Dolla $ign - Vultures 2

At this point, we’re tired of everything Kanye, and his practice of releasing messy unfinished projects. When Vultures 2 eventually sees its last update, there will probably be some strong moments, but damn man…

Release date: August 3, 2024.

Ray Vendetta & Endemic Emerald - Sly & Agatha

UK underground rap veteran Ray Vendetta has teamed up with producer Endemic Emerald to deliver one of the year’s standout Hip Hop albums from the UK. At over 50 minutes, the album might seem lengthy by today’s standards, but it never drags. Ray Vendetta, along with a talented roster of guest artists, keeps the energy high with engaging rhymes, while Endemic Emerald’s atmospheric boom-bap beats add a compelling backdrop that ties the project together beautifully.

Release date: August 2, 2024.

Vstylez - Buddy Revell

Detroit underground veteran Vstylez returns after six and a half years with his third full-length album, Buddy Revell. Known for his gritty, boom-bap style, his previous albums, At Oddz ‘Til I’m Even and Thornton Melon, established him as a force in the Detroit scene. Buddy Revell delivers raw production from big names like Pete Rock, Apollo Brown, and Nottz, and carefully chosen guest appearances, including RJ Payne, Guilty Simpson, and Skyzoo. Tracks like “Hustle Hard” and the LL Cool J homage “L.L. vs. Tarantino” exhibit his artistic and personal growth, making this a strong addition to Vstylez’s catalog.

Release date: August 2, 2024.

Rigz Carrington - Magnum Opus

NYC emcee Rigz steps up his game with his most ambitious project yet. This nearly hour-long album aims for a symphonic vibe, weaving subtle orchestral elements into the production. The result is a rich, layered sound that elevates Rigz’s work to new heights. The guest list includes Rockness Monsta, Inspectah Deck, Chip Fu, Buckshot, and Stetsasonic’s Daddy-O, veteran voices that add depth and variety to the tracks, complementing Rigz’s style.

While the production shines as the album’s strongest aspect, the lyrical content doesn’t consistently match its lofty ambitions. The hour-long runtime can feel a bit stretched at times, with the content not quite sustaining the album’s length. That said, the beats are undeniably dope. The orchestral influences create a unique sound that sets Magnum Opus apart from Rigz’s previous work.

Is this truly Rigz’s defining work? It might not fully live up to its bold title, but it’s another step forward for the artist. The album shows Rigz’s growth and willingness to experiment with his sound. Fans of ambitious Hip Hop that blends classical music elements with fresh production, will want to check out Magnum Opus.

Release date: August 2, 2024.

Killer Mike - Michael & The Mighty Midnight Revival: Songs For Sinners and Saints

Songs For Sinners and Saints celebrates and expands on his Grammy-sweeping Michael era. It’s feels like a victory lap for the Atlanta legend, blending soulful rewinds with some fresh, combative tracks. Killer Mike’s bringing that classic southern flavor, mixing gospel-tinged hooks with hard-hitting trap beats. The Mighty Midnight Revival choir adds some serious depth, turning tracks like “Slummer 4 Junkies” into epic, 10-minute soul-searching journeys.

From the jump, “Bussin Bricks Intro” hits hard, sampling Otis Redding and reminding everyone why Mike’s a force to be reckoned with. Some might say this feels like a B-sides compilation, with about half the tracks being remixes or expansions from Michael. But for die-hard fans, it’s a chance to dive deeper into Mike’s world. Tracks like “Humble Me” and “Exit 9 (Scenic Route)” hit differently with the added gospel elements and guest spots.

This album isn’t pushing many boundaries, though. Mike’s found a comfort zone with this gospel-trap fusion, and he’s sticking to it. For some, that might feel a bit stagnant. So, is this Killer Mike’s strongest solo outing? Probably not. But it’s a solid piece for the fans who’ve been riding with him since day one. It might not convert the Travis Scott stans who were salty about those Grammys, but it shows Mike’s still got plenty to say. If you’re looking for some thoughtful, soulful Hip Hop with a dash of Atlanta grit, this one’s worth a spin.

Release date: August 2, 2024.

Rakim - G.O.Ds NETWORK - REB7RTH

Rakim is one the greatest emcees of all time, no need to discuss that fact. So a new record from a Hip Hop icon like Rakim is a big event in Hip Hop. G.O.D.’S NETWORK (REB7RTH) marks a long-awaited return for the legendary emcee but falls short of the high expectations set by his iconic status. This seven-track project, clocking in at just over 30 minutes, feels more like a compilation than a cohesive Rakim album.

The God MC takes on production duties himself, delivering solid boom-bap beats that, while competent, lack the finesse to truly elevate the tracks. Rakim’s own verses, though sparse (besides the hooks he only has three real verses on the whole project), showcase glimpses of his legendary skill, but are completely overshadowed by an overwhelming roster of guest appearances.

With over 20 featured artists, including notable names like Kurupt, Masta Killa, Snoop Dogg, Skyzoo, Canibus, Chino XL, Kool G Rap, and Method Man, the album suffers from a lack of focus. Posthumous verses from Nipsey Hussle, DMX, Fred the Godson, and Prodigy add a bittersweet nostalgia but further contribute to the project’s disjointed feel – the album’s overall impact is diluted by its brevity and the limited presence of Rakim himself.

While G.O.D.’S NETWORK provides a welcome dose of classic Hip Hop for die-hard fans, it leaves us yearning for a more substantial, Rakim-centric project that truly showcases the skills of one of rap’s greatest rappers.

Release date: July 26, 2024.

HooksArthur - Hundred Hand Hooks

New York’s HooksArthur dropped a knockout with his latest album, with a style that’s becoming underground Hip Hop’s new wave. The production is trippy and off-beat and HooksArthur’s rapid-fire, free-associative flow meshes perfectly with these hazy beats. His clever wordplay demands multiple listens to catch every bar, reminiscent of Kool Keith’s stream-of-consciousness style. The blunted percussion creates a disorienting backdrop for Hooks’s syllable-packed verses, delivering a one-two punch of lyrical dexterity and atmospheric production. This album marks a new high for HooksArthur, promising an exciting direction for his future work.

Release date: July 26, 2024.

Coyote - L.Aliens

Coyote’s sophomore LP, L.Aliens, presents the Morales brothers, LadiesLoveGuapo and Ricky Blanco, elevating their craft with a diverse array of styles from boom bap to trap, jazz rap, and Latin influences. Following their 2022 debut, Thicker than Water, this album cements their rising status in the West Coast Hip Hop scene. Standout tracks like “Pop the Trunk” and “3 Lokos” feature hardcore lyricism and production reminiscent of 90s Hip Hop. Collaborations with artists like Shaquille O’Neal, B-Real, and Westside Boogie add to the album’s appeal. Despite the cheap-ass cover art, L.Aliens is a must-listen for its lyrical wit and genre-blending innovation.

Release date: July 26, 2024.

Substance810 & Clypto - Wise Words

Wise Words is another gem in Clypto’s production crown, extending his hot streak. Partnering with Substance810 proves to be a winning combination, as Substance810 consistently delivers worthwhile content and impressive flows. The album is further enriched by guest appearances from Napoleon Da Legend, Supreme Cerebral, O the Great, DJ Grazzhoppa, Triune, Sunez Allah, Big Trip, and DJ Illogik. Wise Words is a strong project, an exhibit of the talents of everyone involved.

Release date: July 26, 2024.

Vic Spencer - The Apes That Was Left Behind

The Apes That Was Left Behind is an album honoring Sean Price, with all its profits going to his family. Originally named If I Was Signed To Duckdown, the project features not only Sean P’s widow and some of his protégés but also artists like Sadat X, Rome Streets, Philmore Greene, Rockness Monsta, and Sean P himself. The Chicago-based rapper brings his intense lyrical style and strives for a unified sound reminiscent of Duck Down Records’ mid-2000s releases. Despite the potential for repetitiveness, the strong content and Vic’s unpredictable verses keep The Apes That Was Left Behind engaging.

Release date: July 26, 2024.

Custom Made - Mosaic Music

Mosaic Music is a middle-of-the-road producer’s album, nothing wrong with it, nothing that stands out either. Custom Made crafted a set of easy-listening boom-bap beats, and rappers like King Magnetic, Vic Spencer, John Jigg$, and Psalm One add their vocals. Forgettable, but worth a spin or two.

Release date: July 26, 2024.

Grafh & 38 Spesh - God’s Timing

God’s Timing reunites the lyrical talents of Grafh and production from 38 Spesh, promising a collaboration that has the potential to deliver something special. But while the project is solid overall, it falls short of the high expectations set by both artists’ past work.

The album features some notable names, including Method Man, Talib Kweli, Memphis Bleek, and Papoose, but even these impressive guest spots don’t elevate the project to standout status. Grafh’s rapping is technically proficient, but his performances lack the memorable punch that could make the album truly remarkable. Similarly, 38 Spesh’s production is competent and rooted in traditional boom bap, but none of the beats distinguish themselves as exceptional.

Don’t mistake us: God’s Timing is an enjoyable listen with solid tracks and commendable efforts from all involved. However, it doesn’t quite reach the heights one might expect given the talent assembled. It’s a good album, but it leaves you wishing for more.

Release date: July 26, 2024.

DJ Pocket & Eddie Meeks - TOXIC MASCULINITY

Solid boom-bap beats crafted by DJ Pocket coupled with listen-worthy bars from Eddie Meeks and guests like Blu, Wise Intelligent, and Supastition – TOXIC MASCULINITY is a well-rounded and fully realized album that will especially appeal to fans of traditional Hip Hop sounds.

Release date: July 23, 2024.

Teeg Austin - No Mercy

Teeg Austin’s latest project is another entry in the underground boom-bap street rap subgenre, and while it doesn’t particularly stand out, it has its merits. The beats, featuring contributions from Camouflage Monk and others, are solid and engaging. Teeg Austin handles the rhyming well, with notable support from guests like Rome Streetz, who delivers a prominent feature. No Mercy offers some enjoyable moments, even if it doesn’t break any new ground.

Release date: July 22, 2024.

Crimeapple & MichaelAngelo - Tucibi

Michaelangelo’s beats knock, but Crimeapple is not at his most inspired here. Tucibi is a solid listen, but not on par with Bazuko, Crimeapple’s collaboration with Big Ghost Ltd that dropped in May.

Release date: July 19, 2024.

Big Dese & Mike Martinez - DESEPERADO

Boston, Massachusetts underground rapper Big Dese, celebrated for his sharp punchlines and dark humor, teams up once more with Florida’s crate-digging beat specialist Mike Martinez for their seventh project together, Deseperado. The undeniable synergy between Dese and Mike shines through in every track, this is a strong project.

Release date: July 19, 2024.

Kount Fif - Ascension

Ascension, the latest producer’s album from Kount Fif, delivers a solid offering that’ll likely catch the ear of Hip Hop purists. The project blends traditional boom-bap sensibilities with electronic elements and creative sampling, with Kount Fif’s production chops on full display. His beats provide a sturdy foundation for the diverse roster of emcees he’s assembled. The mix of established veterans and up-and-coming talent keeps things interesting throughout the album’s runtime.

Some standout performances come from the likes of Chino XL, known for his complex wordplay, and the always-reliable Killah Priest. Copywrite and Ruste Juxx bring their A-game as well, proving why they’re respected in underground circles. HHGA favorites artists like Awon, Bobby J From Rockaway, and Daniel Son hold their own as always.

While not every track hits the mark, there’s enough quality on Ascension to keep listeners engaged. The production maintains a consistent vibe without becoming monotonous, and the variety of vocal styles prevents the album from feeling one-note. Hip Hop heads looking for that raw, unfiltered sound will find plenty to appreciate here.

Release date: July 19, 2024.

Denzel Curry - King of the Mischievous South Vol. 2

Denzel Curry’s King of the Mischievous South Vol. 2 isn’t the strongest in his discography but it’s a solid tribute to his musical roots. The short album is filled with highs and lows but never feels dull. While the entire project might not resonate, some moments let listeners unwind and enjoy.

Curry shifts from introspection to a mixtape focused on cash and firearms, reflecting Southern street life. The record is predictable but entertaining, flaunting Curry’s confidence and the influences behind his rise. The album revisits his older style but lacks the punch of his previous work, making it a passable trap album but missing the compelling darkness of his earlier music.

Release date: July 19, 2024.

Curren$y & MonstaBeatz - Radioactive

At 31 minutes Radioactive is too short to consider it a proper full-length, and average performances from Curren$y, coupled with nondescript production from MonstaBeatz make for an average Spitta project. A few worthwhile moments merit a listen or two.

Release date: July 19, 2024.

Trizz & MIKE SUMMERS - Cavi En Cursive

Cavi En Cursive is a high point in Trizz’s career, potentially his most impressive work. This West Coast-inspired summer album demonstrates growth in content and flows, powered by MIKE SUMMERS’ versatile production. The 16-track project blends boom-bap, g-funk, and trap elements, creating a rich sonic landscape for Trizz’s gritty lyricism.

Tracks like “Calligraphy,” “Baseline,” and “Curb Service” highlight Trizz’s storytelling skills and his ability to paint vivid pictures of street life. The album boasts an impressive roster of guest appearances, including Brotha Lynch Hung, Blu, and Flee Lord, enhancing the project’s depth.

Cavi En Cursive solidifies Trizz’s position in the West Coast rap scene, offering a great mix of introspection, braggadocio, and social commentary, all wrapped in a polished, high-energy package. The collaboration between Trizz and MIKE SUMMERS proves fruitful, resulting in a cohesive and engaging listening experience representing the best modern West Coast Hip Hop.

Release date: July 19, 2024.

Dillon & Batsauce - What Have We Done

Underground Hip Hop veterans Dillon and Batsauce have been making unorthodox rap music together for nearly 20 years with a simple formula: Batsauce makes the beats, Dillon writes the songs, and whatever happens, happens. After carving out their own lane with a catalog of EPs and LPs over the past two decades, the duo has now released What Have We Done?

The title of their latest effort could be rhetorical or a genuine question. Dillon and Batsauce probably don’t want to know the answer, nor do they want listeners to overthink it. Instead, What Have We Done? invites listeners to experience the trials and tribulations, the small wins, and the big losses of aging independent artists in an increasingly competitive music world.

The album features contributions from a well-curated crew of characters, including legends like Grand Puba and Kool Keith, as well as modern rap heroes like Quelle Chris and Reef the Lost Cauze. The result is a collection of songs that range from personal to aspirational to perhaps a bit delusional. Whether it’s ‘too much’ or ‘not enough,’ the question What Have We Done? remains open to interpretation. It might not be a question at all, but rather a visceral reaction as career creators reflect on a life lived on the edge. With nothing but great beats and relatable rhymes, What Have We Done is a fun listen.

Release date: July 12, 2024.

Action Bronson - Johann Sebastian Bachlava The Doctor

Action Bronson’s Johann Sebastian Bachlava the Doctor teams him up with producers Daringer and The Alchemist for a standout little project. Known for his humor and unique style, Bronson blends jazzy and rock influences, creating a fresh but familiar sound. Despite its brief runtime of barely over 30 minutes, which feels too short to be considered a proper full-length album, this project delivers some of his best work in years. Tracks like “Hideo Nomo” and “NBA Leather On NBC” shine with top-tier production and memorable bars. With quality beats and Bronson’s entertaining lyrics, this album is a treat for AB fans and new listeners alike.

Release date: July 12, 2024.

YNX716 - Messages In Money

With Messages In Money, Buffalo-based rapper YNX716 delivers a powerful album that blends 90s Hip Hop nostalgia with contemporary storytelling. The project explores the complex relationship between money, success, and artistic integrity. YNX716 examines wealth’s dark side on the title track over a thumping bassline and tense strings. He continues this theme, dissecting the disconnect between financial and artistic success.

The album’s production shines with meticulously crafted loops of crisp snares, haunting pianos, and dramatic strings, creating an atmospheric backdrop for YNX716’s narratives. His vocal delivery, alternating between weariness and determination, perfectly conveys his gritty, street-level observations.

While rooted in 90s aesthetics, YNX716’s perspective is decidedly modern, offering mature insights on industry survival and personal growth. This album is a must-listen for fans of thoughtful, lyrically-driven Hip Hop.

The OG Ninja - Cocacabana

The OG Ninja’s short album Cocacabana features Elcamino, Estee Nack, Monday Night, and Amiam, with beats crafted by Noir Tapes, Nineteen94, Silencio, Misterdillinger, and The OG Ninja himself. The instrumentals on this project are largely drumless yet deliciously atmospheric, with tasteful basslines and piano loops giving off laidback vibes that contrast nicely with OG Ninja’s street raps. At 32 minutes, Cocacabana is too short to leave a lasting impression, and in the crowded field of similar-themed projects, it is hard to stand out. However, this one is worth a spin or two.

Release date: July 9, 2024.

8ch2Owens & Tali Rodriguez - The Art Attack

The Art Attack by 8ch2Owens and Tali Rodriguez is a raw, emotionally charged album that captures a tumultuous year in 8ch2Owens’ life. The project showcases the veteran emcee’s confident delivery and relatable rhymes, backed by Tali Rodriguez’s hard-hitting production. From launching a radio station to ending a long-term relationship and relocating, 8ch2Owens pours his experiences into every track. The result is a cathartic journey through peaks and valleys, with guest appearances from DJ Glibstylez, Sankofa, and others adding depth to the narrative. This collaboration between the South Florida Hip Hop staple and Knuckle Dragguz producer is an eminently listenable album that proves great art can indeed grow from struggle and pain.

Release date: July 5, 2024.

Mr Key & Illinformed - Kez

Kez is an album that grows on you with each listen. UK rap veteran Mr Key’s sleepy delivery and Illinformed’s tranquil instrumentals give it a quirky quality. The jazzy boom-bap beats complement Mr Key’s humorous and relatable rhymes perfectly. Appearances from prominent names in the UK underground scene, such as Smellington Piff, Dirty Dike, Leaf Dog, BVA, and Jam Baxter, add extra value to this entertaining project.

Release date: July 5, 2024.

Stalley - Peerless

Prolific Ohio rapper Stalley has released numerous projects since his mixtape debut in 2008, yet his style may still be unclear to many listeners. His discography includes mainstream-friendly music and trap-tinged projects, but in 2021, he released his best work under Apollo Brown’s guidance: the boom-bap-flavored Blacklight LP. While Peerless may not reach the heights of Blacklight, it is still one of Stalley’s better works. With laid-back beats, solid flows, and engaging content, Peerless offers a worthwhile listening experience.

Release date: July 5, 2024.

Bizarre & Foul Mouth - He Got A Gun 3: Art Peace

Detroit emcee Bizarre, a founding member of the now-defunct D12, releases his seventh full-length solo LP, He Got a Gun 3: Art Peace. Known for his 1998 debut EP Attack of the Weirdos, a hometown classic, and his 2005 full-length debut Hannicap Circus, Bizarre has consistently dropped music over the years, of mixed quality. The Foul Mouth-produced He Got a Gun trilogy has revitalized his career, these projects offers some of the best work of his solo career.

He Got a Gun 3: Art Peace reinforces Bizarre’s growth and proves his collaboration with Foul Mouth is beneficial for him. The production’s blend of boom bap, jazz rap, and psychedelia allows Bizarre to shine, making this trilogy to be his career’s best work. This album may well be his best overall album of his career, albeit with formulaic flows and the typical shock-value bar here and there, but overall pretty fun.

Release date: July 3, 2024.

Nothing special maybe, but enjoyable nonetheless.

Megan Thee Stallion - MEGAN

Megan Thee Stallion continues to dominate as one of the better mainstream rappers of the 2020s. With a career that skyrocketed from underground to chart-topping following the Tory Lanez controversy, Megan proves her lyrical prowess once again on her latest album. While not quite reaching the heights of Fever, this album showcases Megan finding her groove with notable Japanese influences. Tracks like “HISS” and “Broke His Heart” stand out with their sharp lyricism and vibrant production. The album balances Southern Hip Hop vibes with experimental elements, although some tracks like “Worthy” miss the mark. We have little interest in mainstream rap, MEGAN is a decent album though.

Release date: June 28, 2024.

KXNG Crooked & Joell Ortiz - Tapestry

Super duo Housing Authority Rap District (H.A.R.D.), featuring Joell Ortiz and KXNG CROOKED, return with their 4th and final LP, Tapestry. Both artists, once members of Slaughterhouse, have faced notorious label issues but have continued to thrive in their solo careers. H.A.R.D. debuted during the pandemic with an acclaimed EP and followed up with two full-length albums. Tapestry offers a mix of soulful, boom-bap, and trap-flavored beats, resulting in a varied production quality. Lyrically, Ortiz and CROOKED deliver as always, but some tracks here are hindered by mediocre beats. While not their best work, “Tapestry” is a solid conclusion to H.A.R.D.’s run.

NCL-DøøFus - NCL- DØØFUS 3: BULLETPROOF KUFFLINX

NCL-TM and DøøFus, collectively known as NCL-DøøFus, deliver a captivating project with Bulletproof Kufflin. Hailing from Hampton, Virginia, DøøFus has already made a name for himself with several intriguing works, and this collaboration with NCL is a strong addition to his repertoire. Bulletproof Kufflin features quirky, mostly drumless instrumentals paired with psychedelic bars and off-beat rhymes, making it a must-listen for the left-field crowd. Stoners will particularly appreciate this album, but its unique style makes it worth listening to for anyone seeking something different.

Release date: June 23, 2024.

COLAMP - TAPE

In 2005, producer KDT Produced It and rapper Nathan Nice met through a mutual friend, Josh Stone, in Los Angeles. They collaborated on “Cold Lamp” for Nathan’s EP and then parted ways. Fifteen years later, they reconnected when Nathan bought KDT’s first vinyl record. They began creating new music, naming their project COLAMP, a nod to their first collaboration. Nathan’s longtime collaborator Arbs joined for turntable work, and engineer/DJ Breeze completed the crew. The term “cold lamp,” popularized by Public Enemy’s Flavor Flav’s song “Cold Lampin’ With Flavor”, means deep relaxation and empowerment, reflecting their love for Hip-Hop and self-discovery.

TAPE is a fun little project. Rough around the edges like a mixtape, with plenty of 80s and 90s vibes to give it a nice throwback feel.

Release date: June 21, 2024.

NightjaR - Mala Leche

Jimi Goodwin, the creative force behind British band Doves, takes flight with a new project under the moniker NightjaR. His NightjaR debut album, Mala Leche (Spanish for “Bad Milk”), is a testament to the borderless power of the internet. Forget geographical limitations – Goodwin crafted this 16-track beast through late-night email exchanges and social media connections, assembling a global crew of Hip Hop heavyweights.

Mala Leche isn’t your typical rap album. Goodwin lays down a foundation of eclectic instrumentals, punctuated by the lyrical stylings of Guilty Simpson, Homeboy Sandman, Vast Aire, Quelle Chris, and others. But Mala Leche isn’t all bars. Instrumental tracks like “Sylvester” and “The F It Boogaloo” exhibit Goodwin’s production chops, with banging beats or jazz-infused grooves. These atmospheric interludes alternating with the vocal tracks create a dynamic listening experience that ebbs and flows.

Mala Leche is a vibrant Hip Hop cocktail of musical styles, the creative sparks ignited by online connections. It’s a strong boundary-pushing journey, proving that distance is no match for artistic vision in the digital age.

The album includes guest appearances from El Da Sensei and members of Outsiders Syndicate, adding to its authentic sound. Spanning 11 tracks, this project takes listeners on a journey from the Twin Cities to the Five Boroughs, featuring contributions from frequent collaborators like Slug, Nazeem, Nejma Nefertiti, Bobby J From Rockaway, Tone Spliff, and Queensbridge icon Tragedy Khadafi.

Break The Stereo is a compelling listen, with hard-hitting beats and sharp rhymes that showcase the chemistry between all involved. There are plenty of dope tracks here, but the title song “Break The Stereo” featuring Tragedy Khadafi is the absolute stand-out cut.

Release date: June 21, 2024.

Da Beatminerz - Stifled Creativity

Da Beatminerz, the Brooklyn-based production duo of brothers Mr. Walt & DJ Evil D, are celebrated for their 90s affiliation with the Boot Camp Clik. After releasing Brace 4 Impak in 2001 and Fully Loaded w/ Statik in 2005, they return nearly two decades later with Stifled Creativity, their third LP under Soulspazm Records.

This 68-minute album boasts an impressive guest list featuring AZ, De La Soul, KRS-One, Pharoahe Monch, Ruste Juxx, Ras Kass, Apathy, Black Moon, Smif-N-Wessun, General Steele, Lil Fame, Camp Lo, and Keith Murray, among many others.

Standout tracks include album opener “Seckle”, where KRS-One delivers powerful verses over a gritty boom-bap beat. Apathy’s “Martial Law” hits hard with a hook built on a sample from Run DMC’s “My Adidas.” Ras Kass brings funky West Coast vibes on “Back in Style” and the album closes strong with De La Soul, Pharoahe Monch, and Rasheed Chappell discussing street life on “My Year.”

Stifled Creativity represents a triumphant return to Da Beatminerz’s signature boom-bap sound. With a stellar guest list and their mastery of sampling, this album marks a welcome and powerful comeback.

Release date: June 21, 2024.

Your Old Droog - Movie

Your Old Droog’s ninth studio album, Movie, sees the Ukrainian-American lyricist returning with a project that balances varied production styles and introspective themes. Known for his 90s Hip Hop style and comparisons to Nas and MF Doom, Droog floats over beats from notable producers like Just Blaze, Harry Fraud, Madlib, and others.

On Movie, Droog delivers observations on the rap game, reflections on his childhood, and classic braggadocio, all wrapped in his improved lyricism. While he occasionally drops a questionable line, his ability to toe the line between charmingly bold and overly flamboyant remains intact.

The album starts slowly but picks up momentum, maintaining consistency throughout. Droog’s earnest reflections on his struggles, upbringing, family, and heritage shine through tracks like “Mantra” and “Grandmother’s Lessons.” “The Sandbox” stands out as a touching tribute to three children who passed too soon.

Droog also showcases his witty side with clever bars on tracks like “Success & Power,” “Crescent Moon,” and “3 MILLION,” while songs like “I Think I Love Her” and “A Damn Shame” add a charming touch. However, some lines, such as a controversial Hitler reference on “Mercury Thermometers,” are hard to ignore, though they are thankfully few and far between.

The production on Movie is solid, with a vintage-like quality and samples that sound delightfully dirty and blurry. Droog’s technical proficiency shines, making this one of his most complete projects in recent years. Overall, Movie is a strong addition to Your Old Droog’s discography. Fans of 90s Hip Hop and thoughtful, introspective lyrics will find much to enjoy here.

Release date: June 20, 2024.

Bub Styles - Fume Raider

Though its short duration may not give it lasting impact, Fume Raider is worth a listen for fans of unfiltered, gritty Hip Hop.

Invizible Handz & Nijahova - Jah Handz

Despite its cheap cover art, Jah Handz by Invizible Handz and Nijahova is surprisingly strong. The album features atmospheric instrumentals and solid rhyming with street rap content, making it worth a listen. Don’t let the bad cover fool you; this LP is more than decent and deserves a spin.

Release date: June 19, 2024.

jev. - when angels cry.

Jephté Kweto, known professionally as jev., delivers his most complete project to date with when angels cry. This Congolese-Canadian rapper shows off his potential through a mix of soulful beats, glittering pianos, and melodic flows, particularly shining in the back half of the album. Despite a slow start with some generic-sounding trap-flavored tracks, the project quickly picks up after the first interlude, transitioning into a more focused sound.

jev. wears his influences on his sleeve, drawing inspiration from modern greats like Kendrick Lamar and JID. His lyrical improvement and ear for slick production are evident throughout the album, with tracks like “ALICE.” and “THE ART OF WAR” highlighting his smooth rhyme schemes.

The production on when angels cry is slick, with authentic drum beats, gentle piano melodies, and smooth soul samples creating a mainstream-friendly listening experience. One of the album’s highlights, “WINGS IN THE SKY,” features lush R&B backing vocals and an impressive electric guitar closing. Despite some dull moments, when angels cry is a strong album that reflects jev.’s growth as an artist. While he still has room to carve out his own unique sound and move beyond his obvious influences, this project is a promising step in his career, leaving us curious to see where he goes next.

Ty Farris - Enigma With An Attitude

On Enigma with An Attitude, Ty’s collaborates with some of our favorite underground producers, like Futurewave, Animoss, August Fanon, Wino Willy, Wavy Da Ghawd, and Camoflauge Monk. Tracks like “Alchemy in the Trenches”, “Mind of the Jigsaw”, and “The Man, The Myth, The Mystery” display his deadly lyricism. This album explores the complex, mysterious nature of the streets, offering thought-provoking lines and a unique, reflective approach.

Their previous collaboration, Rosecrans, received significant acclaim, and now, seven years later, they bring Chupacabra to life.

The album features dope tracks like the piano-laden title track with The Game, the Eazy-E tribute “Eazy Call” with Big Hit, and the funky instrumental “Chupa’s Groove” with Thundercat. With guest appearances from Suga Free, Jay Worthy, Larry June, Channel Tres, Wiz Khalifa, Bun B, Curren$y, and more, Chupacabra captures the essence of West Coast Hip Hop, blending soulful beats, introspective lyrics, and smooth production.

Spanish Ran - Abandoned Saints

Producer Spanish Ran’s ominous beats are undeniably dope, going well with the rhymes from talented underground spitters like Madhattan, FastLife, Ty Farris, UFO Fev, Asun Eastwood, and Primo Profit. While none of the content truly stands out, the combination of great beats and solid rhyming makes for a decent underground Hip Hop project, even if it’s a bit forgettable.

It’s a solid underground Hip Hop project, even if it is somewhat generic and doesn’t quite rise above the crowd.

Release date: June 7, 2024.

Tha Dogg Pound - W.A.W.G. (We All We Got)

West Coast veterans Daz Dillinger and Kurupt reunite under the DPG banner for Legacy, an album featuring Snoop Dogg and the Eastsidaz. The result is a mixed bag, offering a trip down memory lane with uneven execution.

Fans of classic DPG will find moments to appreciate. Daz and Kurupt come with their undeniable chemistry, their flows interlocking on tracks like back in the day. The return of collaborator Butch Cassidy adds another layer of nostalgia. Some songs are catchy, sticking with you long after the music stops. The album struggles to recapture the raw energy of DPG’s golden era though. The production and rapping lack the punch of their earlier g-funk anthems. Those yearning for the fire of their mid-90s days might be disappointed by the softer edge.

Legacy is ultimately a nostalgic listen with mixed results. Some may find themselves enjoying the reunion and catchy moments, others might miss the bite of DPG’s classic sound. We think it’s an OK listen, but ultimately one that will be quickly forgotten.

Release date: May 31, 2024.

Tru Trilla - XVI: Return Of The Gods

Tru Trilla remains a potent voice, tackling social issues and personal struggles with his trademark bravado. From the fierce energy of “No Joking Around” featuring N.B.S. and Recognize Ali to the introspective “Respectfully” with Justo the MC and NapsNDreds, “XVI” showcases the full spectrum of Tru Trilla’s talent. XVI: Return of the Gods is a celebration of lyrical prowess, a must-listen for fans of raw 90s-centric Hip Hop.

Dave East, Mike & Keys - APT 6E

From 2010 to 2016, Dave East called apartment 6E in Queens’ Ravenswood Houses his home. Now, APT 6E serves as a nostalgic soundtrack, a walk down memory lane for the rapper. East reconnected with producer duo Mike & Keys for the entire project and even brought in some familiar faces for guest spots – Shaggy, Buddy, Kurupt, and Stacy Barthe all lend a hand. While we feel Dave East never really recaptured the lightning in a bottle of his earliest work, APT 6E feels like a big step back in the right direction. It’s a strong effort, brimming with nostalgia and fresh sounds that paint a vivid picture of his past.

Release date: May 31, 2024.

Cella Dwellas & Taiyamo Denku - Talk Nice

German producer Bofaatbeatz reunites with his frequent collaborator Taiyamo Denku, with 90s Hip Hop duo Cella Dwellas for Talk Nice. While the album’s wordplay and wit don’t quite pierce as deeply as the original, and the guest features miss the mark, Kevlar remains a solid offering that celebrates Brotha Lynch Hung’s legacy.

Release date: May 28, 2024.

The Quarter Inch Kings & Che Uno - Sun Of May

Toronto production duo The Quarter Inch Kings (Verbs & TymE) return with Sun Of May, a project featuring the Spanglish rhymes of rapper Che Uno. Sun Of May builds and improves on their 2019 collaboration Revolution Speed. The production shines, offering diverse sounds that match Che Uno’s lyrical style. While Che Uno delivers solid bars, his flow might struggle to hold listeners’ attention for a full LP. Thankfully, the album features guest spots from established names like Lord Juco, Al Divino, and Estee Nack, adding variety and fresh perspectives to the project.

Overall, Sun Of May is a strong effort. The Quarter Inch Kings deliver some of their best beats yet, and the guest features add a welcome change of pace. This collaboration is a solid listen for fans of soulful Hip Hop with a Spanglish twist.

Now they are back with their The Path LP. This album stays true to their Golden Age roots, offering a sound that feels familiar yet fresh. Kind of generic maybe, but a fun listen nonetheless.

Release date: May 23, 2024.

Juicy J - Mental Trillness 2

Three Six Mafia co-founder Juicy J takes listeners on a rollercoaster ride through his latest tape, Mental Trillness 2. The Tenessee rapper reflects on personal growth and the struggles that come with newfound wealth. Tracks hint at an introspective side, exploring the idea that “Trillness” is about realness, acknowledging the stresses of both poverty and riches.

However, the ride isn’t always smooth. The first half is so-so, with basic beats and uninspired rapping from Juicy J himself. The energy picks up considerably in the latter half, featuring strong guest appearances and a more focused Juicy J. Despite some inconsistencies, Mental Trillness 2 showcases Juicy J’s signature style. While a few lyrics fall flat and flows occasionally falter, there are moments of dopeness that remind listeners of his skill.

Ultimately, Mental Trillness 2 is a solid Juicy J tape. It delivers the expected dose of trillness, with a glimpse of personal growth and a noticeable improvement in the album’s second half.

Release date: May 21, 2024.

Black Soprano Family hits us with Struggle Mike’s Honor, a 33-minute barrage of underground boom-bap. The beats by DJ Shay, Roar X, and DJ Benoit knock hard, but it’s nothing you haven’t heard before. The same story with the rhymes – veterans like Jeru the Damaja, Planet Asia, Benny the Butcher, and Eto drop fire, but the content is like what we usually hear in this corner of underground Hip Hop. Here’s the thing: Struggle Mike’s Honor isn’t a miss, far from it. The production’s tight, and the guest spots are undeniably strong. Fans of modern underground boom-bap with dope bars will dig this album, even if it’s a short listen that plays it safe on the sonic side.

Release date: May 17, 2024.

Release date: May 17, 2024.

Ghostface Killah - Set The Tone (Guns & Roses)

New York legend Ghostface Killah returns with his 16th solo album, Set The Tone (Guns & Roses), his first on Mass Appeal Records. Ghostface is a Wu-Tang Clan mainstay known for delivering consistent quality, as evidenced by classics like Ironman (1996), Supreme Clientele (2000), Fishscale (2006), and Twelve Reasons To Die (2013). His 2019 effort Ghostface Killahs was a rare misstep. Set The Tone should have rectified that, but unfortunately, it failed painfully.

The ‘Guns’ part of the album starts promisingly enough, with a couple of hard-hitting songs. Tracks like “6 Minutes,” “Pair Of Hammers,” and “Scar Tissue” offer glimpses of the brilliance we expect. Another standout is “Champion Sound”, a track that pays homage to the classic Boogie Down Productions song “The Bridge Is Over” with its similar beat and vibe. The rest of the album fails to leave a (positive) lasting impression.

In fact, the ‘Roses’ side of the album, characterized by a lifeless R&B fusion, takes a sharp turn for the worse. The unfunny skits fall flat, and most features, besides veterans like Method Man, Nas, and a surprisingly strong showing from Kanye West, fail to impress. Overall production is mediocre at best, and the hooks generally suck. The second half drags the album down considerably, with some of the weakest material in Ghostface’s career.

While included here out of respect for Ghostface’s legacy, Set The Tone (Guns & Roses) ultimately disappoints. There are a few bright spots, but the forgettable second half and for the most part lackluster execution make it one of Ghostface’s weaker efforts.

Release date: May 10, 2024.

Dan-e-o - Vigilante

Toronto’s Dan-e-o unleashes social fury on Vigilante, his 6th album. A blend of razor-sharp lyrics and social commentary, it critiques everything from gun violence to racism. Inspired by “Dexter” and “Death Note,” Dan-e-o aims to metaphorically “kill” negativity. Vigilante delivers his signature punchlines while pushing boundaries as his most provocative project to date. He calls out figures like Kanye West, Donald Trump, and Candace Owens, alongside societal ills like Fox News and police brutality. The soundscape is heavy boom-bap, perfectly tailored for head-nodding. Production comes from Toronto’s Big Sproxx and Charisma (of Monolith), with a guest beat by Japan’s S-KY THE COOKINJAX. Featuring Masta Ace (among others) and a confident Dan-e-o declaring these his best songs ever, Vigilante definitely is a potent listen.

Release date: May 10, 2024.

Masamoon - B.I.D.S. (Beautifully Ignorant Disrespectful Sh*t)

Masamoon is a four-man rap crew consisting of Big Left, Billy Nojokes, Aztek The Barfly, and Frankie Fadeless. Inspired by the legendary blade-smith Masamune, they hone their craft with relentless dedication, channeling the raw energy and intricate wordplay of the golden era. Their Hip Hop is hardcore boom-bap, drawing on classic influences but infused with their own distinct flavor.

What characterizes Masamoon is the synergy between its members. Big Left commands respect with his razor-sharp delivery, anchoring the group. Billy Nojokes injects humor and charisma with his witty wordplay. Aztek The Barfly delivers intricate rhymes and vivid metaphors, while Frankie Fadeless brings smoothness and balance to the dynamic energy. Together, they form a formidable unit, each member complementing the others’ strengths.

Their debut full-length as a group, B.I.D.S. (Beautifully Ignorant Disrespectful Sh*t), is a banger. Clocking in at a hefty 58 minutes with 17 tracks, it’s a fully realized album brimming with raw underground boom-bap. This release is a must-listen for fans of 90s-centric underground boom-bap, offering some of the rawest and most authentic sounds in Hip Hop this year.

O Finess & 2Wo Offishall - Whores Antidote

Clocking in at a brisk 31 minutes, Whores Antidote might leave you wanting more. However, what it lacks in length the album makes up for in impact. Each of the ten tracks is a banger, brimming with attitude. Producer 2Wo Offishall lays down some seriously knocking beats, providing the perfect platform for O Finess’ smooth street raps to shine. O Finess proves he has the presence to carry an album, and even alongside established names like Shabazz Palaces and The Musalini, he holds his own with confidence.

Release date: May 7, 2024.

Machacha - Kunst.Art

As with any project featuring Danish producer Machacha behind the boards, Kunst.Art is a must-listen for underground Hip Hop enthusiasts. The album lives up to expectations, putting Machacha’s production talents on full display. The true strength lies in the instrumentals Machacha creates, but the lyrical side is no slouch either. He’s assembled a crew of renowned underground artists, including SmooVth, Estee Nack, Daniel Son, Nowaah the Flood, Vega7 the Ronin, Josiah the Gift, Eddie Kaine, Supreme Cerebral, Ty Farris, and WateRR, to name a few.

Overall, Kunst.Art is a dope producer’s album, highlighting Machacha’s sonic vision and complemented by the lyrical skills of the featured artists. Favorite tracks: “Rooftops” and “Ferragamo Bvlgari”.

OT The Real - Pale Horse

OT delivers straight fire on Pale Horse. His rapping is dope, with a gruff voice that grabs you and lyrics that keep things interesting. Slum Village - F.U.N.

After a nearly decade-long hiatus, Slum Village (now a duo of T3 and Young RJ) bursts back onto the scene with F.U.N. This aptly titled album lives up to its name, offering vibrant instrumentals heavily influenced by old disco sounds. The infectious beats complement the bars, making for a fun and engaging listen. Clocking in at a concise 32 minutes, some might find it a bit short after such a long wait. However, what F.U.N. lacks in quantity, it makes up for in enjoyment. F.U.N. is a welcome return for Slum Village.

Release date: May 3, 2024.

Spice 1 - Platinum O.G. 2

Hayward, California veteran Spice 1 returns with his 15th studio album, Platinum O.G. 2. A pioneer in Bay Area gangsta rap, Spice 1 cemented his legacy with his first six albums in the 1990s, most notably the 1993 gangsta rap classic 187 He Wrote.

Following his solid 2019 release Platinum O.G., Spice 1 arguably delivers his strongest offering in over two decades with Platinum O.G. 2. This is largely thanks to the cohesive production by N.O. Joe, who crafted a unified soundscape for the entire album. While the extensive guest list (including heavyweights like CL Smooth, DJ Premier, Snoop Dogg, and MC Eiht) might give it a compilation feel, each feature adds value. Names like Treach, K-Rino, Conway the Machine, MC Eiht, Devin the Dude, KXNG Crooked, B-Legit, Domino, Rick Ross, and a posthumous appearance by Bushwick Bill further solidify the project’s strength. Educational interludes by Sway Calloway add another layer of depth.

Overall, Platinum O.G. 2 is a dope album that showcases a veteran artist still at the top of his game. It’s a must-listen for West Coast Hip Hop fans and a testament to Spice 1’s enduring legacy.

Release date: May 3, 2024.

Ras Kass, RJ Payne & Havoc - GUTTR

Legendary West Coast lyricist Ras Kass expresses his admiration for Mobb Deep’s late Prodigy in a pre-album release press statement: “We all miss Prodigy and that classic Mobb Deep energy, there is no replacing that or him, period! I did want to pay homage to them and channel that vibe. Havoc being on board to set the musical canvas for an entire album has been the opportunity of a lifetime.”

This collaborative project is set up as a tribute to that Mobb Deep sound. Ras Kass teams up with Philly’s R.J. Payne, both known for razor-sharp wordplay. The impressive guest list features names like Method Man, Lil Fame, Kurupt, KXNG Crooked, Twista, Raekwon, Freeway, and DJ Kid Capri (among others). Mobb Deep’s Havoc crafted the entire album’s soundscape. With Ras Kass, R.J. Payne, and the guests channeling Prodigy’s energy, this project feels like a fine tribute to the Queensbridge rapper, even if the album’s vibe is not as gritty as the atmosphere on Mobb Deep’s best records, and there’s nothing truly memorable here. That said, GUTTR is a nice album – here’s hoping it’s just the beginning for this powerful trio.

Release date: May 3, 2024.

Rook Director & SB the Wavegod - Keep It Rolling

Rook Director and producer SB the Wavegod team up for a smooth little project titled Keep It Rolling. Release date: May 3, 2024.

Pro Dillinger & Sean Kelly - Reasonable Dirt

At a mere 31 minutes there’s not enough content here to leave a lasting impression, but Pro Dillinger rarely disappoints and he doesn’t disappoint with Reasonable Dirt. Sean Kelly’s beats are on the generic side, but they are atmospheric and go well with Pro Dillinger’s gruff flow.

Release date: April 30, 2024.

Sole & DJ Pain 1 - Vault 1312

Sole, a founding member of the influential avant-garde Hip Hop collective Anticon (known for projects like Selling Live Water and Sole And The Skyrider Band), returns with Vault 1312, his fifth collaboration with DJ Pain 1 (following 2022’s Post-American Studies). As with all of Sole’s work, this album caters to a specific audience that appreciates his activistic views and unconventional rapping style. Vault 1312 showcases Sole’s strengths: sharp lyrics tackling thought-provoking, current topics, delivered over DJ Pain 1’s slightly left-field but surprisingly accessible instrumentals. While unlikely to attract new fans, this album is a must-listen for die-hard Sole followers.

Release date: April 26, 2024.

Classified - Luke's View

Canadian Hip Hop veteran Classified delivers a powerful return with his album Luke’s View. The project showcases his trademark lyrical prowess over a selection of smooth, summer-infused beats. We’re not too crazy about the hooks on some of the songs here, but that’s a minor complaint about an otherwise strong album. Followers of Classified’s work will already be diving into Luke’s View, but newcomers are also in for a treat. This one offers insightful lyricism with a laid-back throwback vibe.

Release date: April 26, 2024.

Termanology & NasteeLuvzYou - Time is Currency

The standout feature of this Termanology project is its impressive guest roster. Icons like Kool G Rap, Ras Kass, Lil Fame, and Masta Ace appear, alongside other talented artists. However, NasteeLuvzYou’s middel-of-the-road production falls somewhat flat, lacking memorability. Termanology, known for his steady output, showcases his skill as a rapper, but this particular project comes across more as a compilation album with all the guest rappers. While there are a couple of standout tracks worth transferring to another playlist, the majority here may fade from memory.

Release date: April 26, 2024.

Weapon E.S.P, Ghost of the Machine & Reckonize Real - Savageland 2

Underground Hip Hop trio Savageland is back on the scene after a four-year hiatus. Their sophomore album, Savageland II, picks up where their dope debut left off, showcasing the razor-sharp wordplay and tight chemistry of Weapon ESP and Ghost of the Machine. Renowned producer Reckonize Real delivers a soundscape that perfectly goes with the rappers’ styles. Each track feels personal, reflecting on life’s experiences in the post-pandemic world with raw honesty.

Savageland II isn’t a genre-defining classic, but it’s a strong follow-up that demonstrates the growth of all three artists. Fans of their debut will find plenty to enjoy here, particularly the duo’s effortless flow and insightful narratives. While it might not break new ground, Savageland II is a solid and enjoyable listen for underground Hip Hop enthusiasts.

Release date: April 24, 2024.

Nascent - Don’t Grow Up Too Soon

Chicago’s Nascent hits the mark with Don’t Grow Up Too Soon. While it leans a bit more mainstream than our usual preference, make no mistake: this is a well-produced album that transcends the generic Hip Hop mold. Easy-listening melodic beats and thoughtful content make it a smooth listen. Guest appearances from artists like Ab-Soul, Saba, Maxo Kream, and Paul Wall elevate Nascent’s vocals, adding another layer of appeal. Even for those who typically shy away from mainstream fare, Don’t Grow Up Too Soon is worth a spin.

Release date: April 24, 2024.

Skrewtape & IceRocks - Shoebox Sonata

IceRocks provides the beats, while Skrewtape delivers the bars, joined by guests like Benny the Butcher and Flee Lord. The melodic boom-bap production may seem straightforward, but there is something special to IceRock’s unique touch that distinguishes it from other underground releases. Skrewtape’s gritty voice effortlessly rides over the beats, resulting in a satisfying listening experience.

Release date: April 21, 2024.

Matt Maddox - Year Of The Ox

Beats by Camoflauge Monk, DJ DRK, Nohokai, Dark Arts, SamToo, ChefBoyz, and bars by Matt Maddox along with rhymes and cuts & scratches by guests Ruste Juxx, Copywrite, Spit Gemz, Tone Spliff, DJ TMB, Nohokai, Earl Hazard, and Breedsworld make for a dope underground boom-bap project. Kind of generic maybe, but enjoyable nonetheless.

Release date: April 20, 2024.

Substance810 & Observe - The Lion's Share 3: Pride Of The Lion

Substance810 and Observe are artists we’ve been following for a while, Substance810 always comes with strong content, and Observe Since 98 is a dope producer. For The Lion’s Share 3: Pride Of The Lion Observe’s beats are more straightforward boom-bap than on some of his other works (even if his knack for incorporating obscure samples is evident here too), but they work for Substance810’s bars. The album boasts a strong guest list featuring Ty Farris, Ferris Blusa, Marv Won, D-Styles, Josiah the Gift, and DJ Grazzhoppa. Clocking in at 16 tracks and 46 minutes, The Lion’s Share 3 delivers a solid dose of underground Hip Hop with plenty of value for its runtime.

Release date: April 20, 2024.

Bless Picasso - The Rillest In The Room

Bless Picasso, a rapper, producer, and entrepreneur from Portsmouth, Virginia, draws inspiration from the golden era of Hip Hop, inspired by the sounds of legends like Kool G Rap and Nas. His latest project, The Rillest In The Room, might be short, but it packs a punch. Boasting features from Hip Hop heavyweights like Elzhi, Kool G Rap, and Conway the Machine, alongside beat production by Buckwild, Oh No, Evidence, Khrysis, and Bronze Nazareth, this is a must-listen for fans of 90s-centric underground rap.

Release date: April 19, 2024.

Kooley High & Tuamie - All Infinite

North Carolina’s Kooley High is a five-person crew comprised of two emcees (Charlie Smarts & Tab-One), two producers (Sinopsis & Foolery), and DJ Ill Digitz that has carved a distinct sound by blending soulful but head-knocking drums with smooth flows. All Infinite expands the group’s sonic palette. Teaming up with producer Tuamie, they created a rich musical tapestry uplifting listeners with positive vibes – imagine tight scratches, soulful beats, and insightful lyrics exploring infinity and boundless energy. All Infinite blends classic and modern Hip Hop, balancing retrospective and forward-thinking. Nothing here really stands out, but there are no misses either – this is a solid LP.

Release date: April 19, 2024.

Swank & King Draft - Vice City

Despite being released on 9th Wonder’s Jamla label and boasting production from heavyweights like 9th Wonder himself and Krysis, Swank & King Draft’s latest album seems destined to be overlooked, much like their previous releases. That’s a shame because their entire discography is pretty strong. This record adds extra flavor to its soulful production with guest appearances from Sweata, Reuben Vincent, and Shawn Stockman. The whole project –the beats and rhymes – is quality and deserves a listen.

Release date: April 19, 2024.

Double A.B. & Git Beats - Lungs Of Mahalia

New York’s conceptual rap veteran Double A.B. joins forces with producer Git Beats for a strong project titled Lungs of Mahalia. The album title pays homage to the legendary gospel singer Mahalia Jackson, whose influence is felt in A.B.’s divinely inspired raps delivered over Git’s soulful and slightly unconventional production. However, the content strays far from gospel themes. A.B. navigates the realities of NYC street life, culminating with “Justice,” a scathing protest anthem that closes the album. The guest features are a who’s who of independent Hip Hop, with Eto, Homeboy Sandman, The Musalini, Prince Po, A-Plus, and Young Zee dropping killer verses over Git’s dope instrumentals.

Release date: April 19, 2024.

NugLife - NUGLIFE 2024

Hailing from Koreatown, LA (with Bay Area influences), NugLife is a producer and rapper who blends gritty cityscapes with smooth soul samples, throwing in original guitar, keyboard, and some avant-garde elements for good measure. This sonic recipe is on full display in his NugLife 2024.

While NugLife holds his own on the mic, the true star of the show here is the production. Across the 17 tracks (clocking in at 49 minutes), NugLife keeps things fresh with his diverse instrumentals. The extensive guest list boasts heavy hitters like Boldy James and Planet Asia, who add extra spice to the LP. If you’re looking for a West Coast soundscape with a twist, NugLife 2024 is worth a spin.

Release date: April 18, 2024.

Sankofa - Impossible Bottle Service

“Imagine waking up to an email. Inside that email was a link. Clicking that link leads to a folder. Inside that folder were 80 beats. Impossible Bottle Service is the result of the best of surprises-an unexpected opportunity to build with a master craftsman. Yes, it is true, Sankofa spent his rap budget sending his sons to summer camp, during which time he wrote and recorded Impossible Bottle Service.”

Sankofa’s release schedule is crazy. Impossible Bottle Service is his fourth release of 2024, and it’s another dope project. Straightforward boom-bap, but all the beats and bars are fire, you really can’t go wrong with Sankofa.

Release date: April 15, 2024.

Codenine & Chronic Tone - CÀIRDEAS

CÀIRDEAS is a solid underground project that delivers dope boom-bap vibes. Producer Chronic Tone and rapper Codenine team up for a cohesive listen, but an unfortunate rollout strategy might bury this gem amidst similar releases. However, for those seeking it out, CÀIRDEAS is worth a spin. It delivers the goods for fans of gritty, sample-based sounds of underground Hip Hop.

Release date: April 12, 2024.

B.A.R.S. Murre - Jewelry Store Shootouts

New Jersey emcee B.A.R.S. Murre steps back into the spotlight after a four-year hiatus. Jewelry Store Shootouts, his fifth full-length album, has been a long time coming. Ten of the album’s 17 tracks were released as singles over the past two and a half years, building anticipation for this project. Jewelry Store Shootouts is a clear evolution from Murre’s previous work. A decade in the game has sharpened his lyrical skills, and the chilled-out production is more polished than ever. The guest list is diverse, featuring names like Benny the Butcher, Armani Caesar, and Elcamino. This crew adds layers of flavor, perfectly complementing Murre’s introduction to a wider underground audience.

Release date: April 12, 2024.

Skanks The Rap Martyr & Gstats - Martin & Malcom

Martin & Malcom offers pure, unadulterated hardcore Hip Hop. Skanks delivers the hard bars we’ve come to expect, spitting rhymes over head-nodding boom-bap beats laced with sharp cuts and scratches. The guest list boasts a who’s who of underground spitters, including Ruste Juxx, Milez Grimez, Poison Pen, and Kenyatta Black. Producers like Frost Gamble and J. Sands provide the beats for these lyrical veterans.

If you’re looking for something smooth and polished, look elsewhere. But if you crave raw, hard-hitting boom bap with undeniable lyrical prowess, Skanks the Rap Martyr and GStats have crafted the album for you.

Release date: April 8, 2024.

AKTHESAVIOR & sagun - u r not alone

Fresh off a string of singles, Brooklyn rapper AKTHESAVIOR and Nepalese lo-fi producer sagun join forces on u r not alone. This cross-continental collaboration blends AKTHESAVIOR’s sharp wordplay with sagun’s signature lo-fi soundscapes.

sagun crafts the entire sonic canvas, building atmospheric loops for AK’s bars to flow over. The album kicks off with a focused five-track run, including “Dear World,” “Issues,” “Humble” featuring Pink Siifu, “Tetsuo’s Ways” with Mick Jenkins, and the powerful “No Scars.”

Additional collaborations elevate the project further, with features from Erick The Architect, A$AP Twelvyy, Jaws of Love (Kelcey Ayer of Local Natives), and Azizi Gibson. Overall, u r not alone is a solid listen, delivering smooth rapping over a bed of dreamy lo-fi production. It’s a perfect fit for fans of the genre, while those seeking a more hard-hitting Hip Hop experience might find it a little mellow.

Release date: April 5, 2024.

Marv Won - I'm Fine, Thanks For Asking

Detroit veteran Marv Won emerges from the battle rap trenches with a strong offering, I’m Fine, Thanks For Asking, his debut album on Mello Music Group. This isn’t your typical braggadocious battle rap bravado. Marv Won, a self-described “musical alchemist” and “street poet laureate,” weaves a tapestry of struggle and triumph heavily influenced by his life in the Motor City.

Won’s pedigree shines through. A heavyweight in the battle rap scene, he brings a ferocious lyricism to his rhymes, raw and unfiltered yet deeply personal. This album marks a turning point, showcasing a potent blend of his wordplay and production skills. Features of respected artists like Quelle Chris, Elzhi, Freeway, and Rapper Big Pooh add extra value.

While a few more tracks might have added weight to the project, I’m Fine, Thanks For Asking remains a tight and undeniably dope listen.

Release date: April 5, 2024.

The Band Of The Hawk - There Is No Tomorrow

Comprised of Noah Archangel, King aka Yeaux Majesty, Ash Ra aka Houey Freeman (fka Ashtonomics), P.Ey3, Grynd Seazon, and Juskwam, The Band of the Hawk dives headfirst into the grimy, soulful sounds of classic Wu-Tang on their latest project. Fully produced by Noah Archangel, the album goes for an authentic 90s RZA feel. Features by Wu-Tang Clan veterans Ghostface Killah, Cappadonna, Inspectah Deck, Killah Priest, and Masta Killa further solidify the album’s Wu-Tang connection. But the guest list doesn’t stop there. Kool G Rap and Mobb Deep’s Havoc add their bars, ensuring the album delivers a potent dose of hardcore Hip Hop throughout.

Release date: April 3, 2024.

Steph Simon - The Tulsa King: Everything The Light Touches

Steph Simon is a rapper from Tulsa, Oklahoma, who has been influenced by gospel artists and iconic figures like Notorious B.I.G., OutKast, and UGK. He finds a connection between the current creative energy in Tulsa and the historical vibrancy that defined Black Wall Street, infusing his music with a sense of nostalgia. The Tulsa King: Everything The Light Touches offers mainstream appeal with smooth production and melodic hooks, but will also appeal to fans of 90s Southern Hip Hop. Clocking in at 42 minutes with 12 tracks, Steph Simon delivers a fully realized project that shows he has something to say.

Release date: April 1, 2024.

MC Juice, All Natural & Georgia Anne Muldrow - CALIsthenics

Chicago-born but L.A.-based MC Juice brings the West Coast spirit with Georgia Anne Muldrow (another L.A. resident) on production duties. The sole exception is co-headliners All Natural, repping the Chi-town. But musically, this album is a cross-country voyage. We get airy NYC boom-bap vibes, Southern funk on the title track, and even a dash of synth-laden New Wave. Muldrow’s masterful touch laces the instrumentals with her signature psychedelic flair but leaves ample space for the emcees to shine.

The highs here are undeniable. “Paper Thick,” the dope album opener featuring E-40, Casual, and Del (a clear nod to MC Lyte’s 1988 classic “Paper Thin”), is a banger. Tracks like “CALIsthenics,” “Enemies Of The State,” and the album highlight, “Run It Back” (composed almost entirely of bars from classic Hip Hop tracks) are all top-notch.

However, a few dull moments mar the experience. And with a runtime of just over 30 minutes, any missteps feel magnified. While some moments demand your attention, the overall project feels like a teaser for something more substantial. Still, this is a must-listen, if only for the brilliance of “Run It Back.”

Release date: March 29, 2024.

Pep Love - Acres Of Diamonds

Souls of Mischief and Hieroglyphics member Pep Love’s solo career has never quite matched the heights of his early group work. However, Acres of Diamonds is a strong contender for his best effort since his 2001 debut Ascension. While it lacks anything truly memorable, the album’s chilled-out beats and Pep Love’s entertaining bars make it a worthwhile listen.

Release date: March 29, 2024.

Blu & Shafiq Husayn - Out Of The Blue

Blu and Shafiq Husayn’s Out Of The Blue isn’t flawless. Repetitive moments and some rough mixing hold it back. Yet, each track boasts its own distinct flavor. Blu delivers his raps solidly, even if they don’t leave a lasting impression. Shafiq Husayn’s abstract beats are the album’s defining element, sometimes even overshadowing Blu and the guest artists with their quirky, boom-bap intensity. The inclusion of numerous underground voices adds variety, but the sheer number of guests creates a compilation-like feel. Out Of The Blue might not reach the heights of Blu’s classics like Below The Heavens (with Exile) or Miles (also with Exile), but it’s a respectable addition to his catalog.

Release date: March 29, 2024.

Cappadonna & Iron Shiek - The Man With The Iron Darts

Wu-Tang Clan rapper Cappadonna has a spotty solo career. None of his solo releases have left much impact, and while The Man With The Iron Darts won’t win him any awards either, it’s arguably his strongest effort since his 1998 debut The Pillage. This collaboration with producer Iron Shiek feels like a project Cappadonna invested real effort in, starkly contrasting to most of his recent forgettable at best outings. High-profile features from Onyx, Planet Asia, Masta Killa, Inspectah Deck, Killah Priest, and Sadat X add extra flavor, making The Man With The Iron Darts a surprisingly strong showing for Cappadonna.

Release date: March 28, 2024.

G-Mo Skee & Stu Bangas - Filth City

Hailing from Richmond, California, rapper G-Mo Skee is renowned for infusing horror, humor, and unabashedly raunchy content into his razor-sharp bars, honed through years of underground rap battles. As a member of the Infantry Gang crew, he pioneered a style he dubs “Filth.” For his fourth full-length LP, and his first since returning to Majik Ninja Entertainment, G-Mo Skee teams up with Boston producer Stu Bangas. Known for his hard-hitting boom-bap beats, Stu Bangas delivers once again with straightforward but impactful production. G-Mo Skee’s gritty delivery and uncompromising bars may not appeal to everyone, but fans of that raw, underground hardcore sound will find plenty of satisfaction in Filth City.

Release date: March 25, 2024.

Al.Divino - Pyroglyphs

Pyroglyphs offers a refreshing departure from the usual similar-sounding projects out in today’s underground Hip Hop scenes. Al.Divino’s unique style may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but paired with the dark and quirky production, it’s undeniably intriguing. While it may not cater to every listener’s taste, for those seeking something a bit off the beaten path, this album is a must-listen.

Release date: March 23, 2024.

Flee Lord & Crisis - Full Court Press

Full Court Press comes hot on the heels of Flee Lord and Crisis’s April 2023 collaboration, 2-3 Zone, presenting yet another display of strong underground Hip Hop. While it might be overshadowed by the abundance of similar releases flooding the scene, akin to 2-3 Zone, it is definitely deserving of a listen.

Release date: March 22, 2024.

Future & Metro Boomin - We Don't Trust You

In We Don’t Trust You, Metro Boomin continues his streak of quality production. While not trap enthusiasts, we usually dig Metro’s production, and with his work on this album, it’s no different. The beats on We Don’t Trust You hit hard, maintaining a consistent dark vibe with some unexpected twists. Future’s performance is alright, although his flow can feel repetitive, and his content is lightweight. Kendrick Lamar’s appearance on the album’s standout track “Like That” (over the beat of Rodney O and Joe Cooley’s iconic “Everlasting Bass” song) steals the show with his sharp delivery and clever bars, sparking controversy with his dissing of Drake and J. Cole. Towards the hour-long album’s end, there’s a noticeable drag, lacking the momentum and variety found earlier. Overall, We Don’t Trust You is a solid effort, a trap album that’s more than listenable, mainly thanks to Metro Boomin’s magic touch.

Release date: March 22, 2024.

Mega Ran & Jermiside - The Lure Of Light

After nearly a decade of frequent tag-teaming in the studio, Mega Ran, also known as Random, and Jermiside are teaming up to drop a 12-track collaboration. Mature and thoughtful bars over easy-listening but enjoyable beats – this is a solid project.

Release date: March 22, 2024.

Locksmith - No Atheists In Foxholes

N.A.I.F. (No Atheists In Foxholes) is the new album from Richmond, CA rapper Locksmith. This project features vocal contributions from a diverse lineup including Ransom, Slaine, Jon Connor, Snak the Ripper, Rexx Life Raj, Jane Handcock, Ekoh, Joznez, Chris Webby, Iamsu!, P-Lo, DaBoii, Slimmy B, Adrian Truth, Wrekonize, Sa-Roc, and Rebecca Nobel, along with just a diverse mix of producers. While diversity often is a strength, in this case, it results in a somewhat mixed bag. Locksmith’s skill as a rapper shines through, but the album’s underground appeal with hard-hitting beats and bars clashes with its flatter, more mainstream instrumentals and hooks. Consequently, No Atheists in Foxholes may seem aimed at everyone but risks being overlooked by all. Nevertheless, Locksmith’s insightful lyrics and superior flow provide enough incentive to give this album a few listens.

Release date: March 15, 2024.

Chuck Strangers - A Forsaken Lover's Plea

Chuck Strangers, a prominent figure in the early 2010s NYC rap resurgence, returns to the forefront with A Forsaken Lover’s Plea. Based in LA now, Strangers delivers an album that exudes lushness, featuring candid rhymes enriched by various guest producers, including The Alchemist, Animoss, and Strangers himself. Despite its contemporary sound, Strangers’ production maintains its inherent warmth, seamlessly complementing his introspective and lived-in lyrical style. The album is further elevated by guest verses from a lineup of New York rap stalwarts, ranging from Pro Era cohort Joey Bada$$ and Flatbush Zombies’ Erick the Architect to Queens’ own Remy Banks.

At its core, “A Forsaken Lover’s Plea” delves into Strangers’ intricate relationship with Hip Hop—an amalgamation of a decade’s unwavering commitment to his craft, complete with its triumphs, tribulations, and invaluable lessons in humility, patience, and artistic process. Representing Chuck Strangers’ most expansive solo project since his 2018 solo debut LP, Consumers Park, and following the release of The Boys & Girls EP in May 2023, this album is a slow-burner that gets better with repeated listens.

Release date: March 15, 2024.

The Musalini & John Dutch - Gentlemen Of Leisure 2

Gentlemen Of Leisure 2 is The Musalini’s second release of 2024, following up on the initial Gentlemen Of Leisure which dropped in March 2023. Once again, we’re treated to John Dutch’s slick instrumentals, accompanied by The Musalini’s trademark fly pimp style. The beats take center stage here, making for an overall dope project.

Release date: March 12, 2024.

Estee Nack & Futurewave - Stone Temple Pyrex

Prolific Tragic Allies member Estee Nack always delivers raw underground content, and teaming up with producer Futurewave ensures quality. While Futurewave’s post-boom-bap production can feel repetitive at times, it effectively sets the tone for fans of Roc Marci and Griselda-style street rap.

Release date: March 12, 2024.

M-Dot - Daze Of Greed

In an era of fleeting projects and short-lived attention spans, Boston veteran M-Dot defies the trend with Daze Of Greed, a fully realized 14-track album. This marks his fourth official solo release, and third in as many years, proving his commitment to the classic album format. Daze Of Greed plunges into a dark and gripping world obsessed with materialism. M-Dot’s vulnerability adds an extra layer to the album’s thematic undercurrent of discontent. There are plenty of standouts, our favorite track on Daze Of Greed is “Run Along” with a feature from the legendary Grand Puba and sharp scratches by Dom2er & DJ 7L.

Release date: March 8, 2024.

Supreme Cerebral, O the Great & Alpha Betic - Gold Pyramids

Consisting of 11 tracks, each clocking in at around 4 minutes, this album harkens back to the classic album format – a nod to the old-fashioned approach we love. There are no skits, interludes, or other unnecessary fillers; it’s a straightforward dedication to beats and bars. Supreme Cerebral always delivers with his wordplay, and his collaboration with O The Great on Gold Pyramids proves to be a great move, their undeniable chemistry resonates throughout. The beats crafted by Alpha Betic complement the duo’s rhymes, resulting in a well-rounded underground release. From start to finish, this album offers a front-to-back pure Hip Hop experience that underground enthusiasts will appreciate.

Release date: March 8, 2024.

Clypto - Loopzilla

Loopzilla is one among a plethora of producer albums flooding the scene nowadays. What sets it apart are Clypto’s beats, which offer a flavor distinct from the sea of similar-sounding releases. Featuring lyrical contributions from Tre Eiht, Realio Sparkzwell, Squeegie O, WateRR, Ca$ablanca, Supreme Cerebral, Illah, Payso Jackson, Phil V, Silent Snipers, Miskeen Haleem, Postman L, Brian Bars Burns, IamGAWD, Definite Mass, O Finess, Yasin, and Napoleon Da Legend, the album delivers decent vocals, although nothing particularly memorable. Ultimately, the real draw here lies in the instrumentals.

Release date: March 8, 2024.

Ben Buck, Jamar Equality & Nick Cruz - Low Brow Purists

Low Brow Purists delivers a concise 33-minute dose of underground boom-bap, packed with dope bars courtesy of Ben Buck, Jamar Equality, and Nick Cruz, complemented by guest appearances from Daniel Son, Pro Zay, Lou from Paradise, Termanology, D.Dot Elles, and Mr. Muthafuckin’ eXquire. The gritty beats, crafted by Camoflauge Monk, Small Professor, Argov, Shadowboxin’, Wiardon, Nephew Hesh, Multi Tracker, and Ben Buck himself, set the perfect backdrop. Low Brow Purists may blend in with similar projects in today’s Hip Hop landscape, but the beats and bars’ overall quality lifts it way above the average fare.

Release date: March 1, 2024.

Nef - The Gentleman's Board

NYC-based producer Nef curated an impressive roster of emcees for The Gentleman’s Board, featuring rhymers like Rasheed Chappell, Rome Streetz, The Musalini, Termanology, Wais P, Bobby J From Rockaway, Passport Rav, XP the Marxman, and UFO Fev. This compact project packs a punch with its combination of sharp lyricism and smooth instrumentals. Drenched in dope bars and beats, The Gentleman’s Board may lack truly memorable moments, but it remains consistently engaging.

Release date: March 1, 2024.

Jae Skeese & Superior - Testament Of The Times

Buffalo’s own Jae Skeese teams up with German producer Superior for his fourth studio album, Testament of the Times, a follow-up to the strong Abolished Uncertainties LP from 2023. The album starts strong with the standout track “Union 2’s,” but for us, it’s “Cantonese Characters,” featuring Rome Streetz and Ty Farris, which steals the show as the absolute highlight. Building on the reflective storytelling of his previous album, Jae Skeese continues to entertain with his narratives. Superior’s production offers a nice mix of deep boom-bap beats and drumless instrumentals, even if some tracks are somewhat generic music-wise. Despite this, Jae’s rhyming elevates the album, he is one of the most talented emcees on Conway The Machine’s Drumwork label.

Release date: March 1, 2024.

Maestro Fresh Wes - Rap Prime Minister

Canadian Hip Hop pioneer Maestro Fresh Wes unleashes a mammoth 92-minute album with Rap Prime Minister. While the sheer volume embodies his dedication, it becomes a double-edged sword.

Rap Prime Minister is a mixed bag. Some tracks, marred by weak hooks or jarringly modern production, feel out of place. However, there are undeniable gems like “Somewhere Down The Line” and “Coach Fresh”, bangers that throw it back to the golden age of the 90s. The album boasts guest appearances from Hip Hop icons like Kool G Rap, Kool Keith, Planet Asia, and Ras Kass, adding pockets of brilliance throughout.

Ultimately, the excessive length drowns out the strong content. While there’s a solid 45-minute album buried within, the surplus of mediocre tracks makes Rap Prime Minister a challenging listen.

Release date: March 1, 2024.

LEX & Buck - Real Estate

Beats by Buck, bars from LEX, with vocal contributions from Shabaam Sahdeeq, Eff Yoo, Blue Legacy, Aye Wun, Apokalips the Archangel, and Kesper, plus cuts from Debonair P, DJ M-1, and Tone Spliff. Real Estate offers nothing you haven’t heard before but with its solid rhyming and easy-listening boom-bap beats this is an enjoyable front-to-back listen.

Release date: February 26, 2024.

Fireball Flingaz- Giants Of Defiance

UK Hip Hop veterans Exile & Remark unleash their fury on Giants Of Defiance, a hardcore rap album steeped in the spirit of early 90s Britcore. Packed with raw and uncompromising energy, it returns listeners to the golden age of iconic British acts like Hijack and Gunshot. For those who lived through that era, it’s a potent dose of nostalgia. But Giants Of Defiance transcends mere homage. It’s a must-listen for any fan of quality Hip Hop, proving that Exile & Remark’s brand of furious energy is a welcome addition to the current Hip Hop landscape.

Release date: February 24, 2024.

Ghetts - On Purpose, With Purpose

Ghetts has consistently delivered strong music throughout his career, and with On Purpose, With Purpose, he solidifies his reputation as one of the UK’s premier artists. With a discography boasting three full-length albums and a collection of mixtapes, Ghetts returns with his most vulnerable and introspective effort to date. While his trademark bombastic flows and high-energy beats shine through, especially on standout tracks like “Mount Rushmore” (featuring Kano and Wretch 32), Ghetts also showcases a newfound explorative streak. R&B, gospel, soul, Afrobeats, and amapiano all find their place in the mix, adding depth and dimension to his sound.

In On Purpose, With Purpose, Ghetts’ storytelling reaches new levels of rawness, offering listeners an intimate glimpse into his life and experiences. The album, clocking in at a substantial 64 minutes, maintains a mainstream-friendly appeal, but even for listeners like us who do not care much for mainstream rap, the positives will far outweigh any negatives. The production is tight, seamlessly blending various musical influences, while Ghetts’ vivid lyricism and flawless flow demonstrate his prowess as an artist at the top of his game.

Release date: February 23, 2024.

Chevy Woods - 1998

Chevy Woods, once a hypeman for fellow Pittsburgh native Wiz Khalifa, steps into his own with 1998, a project that builds upon and surpasses his previous mixtapes, which are of mixed quality at best. 1998 features smooth beats that are easy on the ears, paired with Woods’ bars and flows that are equally enjoyable. The album may not break new ground, but it’s undeniably solid and it hits the mark.

Release date: February 23, 2024.

Pushing Buttons - Full Level

Classic boom-bap sound in a fresh dress for 2024. Agent Dan and Mr. Mile teamed up, linked their MPCs, chopped stacks of records, and pushed buttons to create some unique muffled and bassy, but full and warm soundscapes. The result is 14 straight banging beats featuring a variety of dope international MCs (Juice Crew icon Craig G most prominent among them) and polished with tight scratched hooks. Perfect for listeners looking for a 90s-centric boom-bap fix.

Release date: February 20, 2024.

O The Great & Machacha - SxUND GvRDEN

Any project bearing the name of Danish producer Machacha is an automatic must-listen for us. He consistently delivers polished yet dark beats that bring out the best in the emcees fortunate enough to collaborate with him. In this instance, O The Great takes center stage, delivering entertaining bars over kick-ass instrumentals. While this project follows a typical format for the early 2020s—clocking in at a too-short 34 minutes and sharing similarities with much of today’s underground rap— this is a must-listen nonetheless, if only because of Machacha’s involvement.

Release date: February 19, 2024.

Jon Connor - III

Flint, Michigan’s Jon Connor comes through post-Aftermath with III, his most potent studio offering yet. Yeah, it’s overlong with a weaker back-end, the skits can feel unnecessary and, let’s face it, sometimes annoying, and Connor’s preaching moments might not vibe with everyone. But overall, III delivers as a solid rap album. It might be catered towards mainstream tastes, but Hip Hop purists out there will likely find something to enjoy too.

Release date: February 16, 2024.

DJ Moves - Pam Grier's Step Kids

With Pam Grier’s Step Kids, DJ Moves builds upon and enhances his 2022 project, Pam Grier’s Kids. While the legendary actress Pam Grier may not have children of her own, if you grew up watching her films, you were undoubtedly raised on Pam. Similarly, Canadian DJ Moves has been a stalwart in the rap game for over 30 years, influencing numerous artists with his beats and cuts. The platinum-selling DJ and producer has assembled a lineup of emcees, including LXVNDR, Blaq Poet, Tachichi, Ghettosocks, and more, to craft a 12-track boom-bap fest that’s worth a listen.

Release date: February 16, 2024.

Sankofa - Most Anything Of Value

For Most Anything Of Value, his second LP released in 2024, Fort Wayne rapper Sankofa hooked up with producer EDS, resulting in one of Sankofa’s best projects in his extensive catalog. EDS’s tasteful boom-bap beats knock, and Sankofa has strong content throughout the album’s 17 tracks. If you only check out one Sankofa project this year, make it this one.

Release date: February 15, 2024.

Passport Rav, Bloo Azul & Spanish Ran - 83, Too

83, Too sees Passport Rav, Bloo Azul, and Too teaming up once again for a solid follow-up to their 2023 project, 83. Produced by Spanish Ran, this sequel delivers atmospheric underground vibes layered over dope beats and bars. This is a strong listen from start to finish.

Release date: February 15, 2024.

DJ Symphony - It's Bigger Than Music

Knowing this album contains songs like “Anti Mumble Rap,” “Real Hip-Hop” (released as singles in 2019 and 2020, respectively), and “Bring Back Hip Hop,” you can already anticipate the vibe of this album. DJ Symphony, renowned as the tour DJ for the GZA of the Wu-Tang Clan, steps into the limelight with It’s Bigger Than Music, marking his debut producer’s album following a series of mixtapes. For this endeavor, he’s brought on board esteemed lyricists such as Sadat X, Beanie Sigel, Jeru the Damaja, Psycho Les, Ghostface Killah, Capone, Chino XL, Ras Kass, Killah Priest, and others, to lace his boom-ap beats and sharp cuts & scratches with dope bars. Though it is somewhat on the generic side, It’s Bigger Than Music is a solid homage to the ’90s era of Hip Hop, making it essential listening for all Hip Hop traditionalists out there.

Release date: February 14, 2024.

Kanye West & Ty Dolla $ign - VULTURES 1

In the wacky world of Kanye West, where expectations ride high on every release, Vultures 1 falls flat, failing to leave a lasting impression. Teaming up with Ty Dolla $ign, the project strives for coherence but ultimately delivers little to remember. Kanye’s signature traits—megalomania, heartbreak, and self-obsession—have fueled his past works, but here they struggle to find expression. Instead, the album feels loud and shiny, yet strangely vacant, squandering potential gems amid degrading lyrics and messy mixes.

While Ty Dolla $ign and guests like Freddie Gibbs and Playboy Carti inject occasional brightness, Kanye’s verses sink into emptiness and depression, leaving listeners yearning for substance. Apart from some catchy moments, the music itself often feels like a failed attempt to recapture former glory, lacking the innovation and excitement of The College Dropout (2004), Late Registration (2005), Graduation (2007), My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (2010), and Yeezus (2013).

Vultures 1 borrows elements from relatively recent albums like The Life Of Pablo (2016) and Donda (2021) but fails to elevate them, resulting in a lackluster and unnecessary addition to Kanye’s catalog. Comparisons to these previous releases highlight the album’s shortcomings. TLOP and especially Donda had their flaws, but they still showcased flashes of brilliance and genuine creativity, managing to convey a sense of personal and artistic vulnerability that Vultures 1 sorely lacks.

Ultimately, Vultures 1 feels like a missed opportunity—an album that fails to justify its existence. With cringe lyrics, uninspired production, and a forgettable overall vibe, it’s a disappointing entry in Kanye’s discography.

Release date: February 10, 2024.

Rhymefest - James & Nikki: A Conversation

Chicago rapper Rhymefest burst onto the scene with his debut album Blue Collar in 2006. Notably, he co-wrote Kanye West’s “Jesus Walks,” which earned him a Grammy for Best Rap Song at the 47th Annual Grammy Awards. While Blue Collar showed promise, Rhymefest struggled to build upon its success.

His latest project, James & Nikki: A Conversation, continues this trend. While there’s nothing inherently wrong with the album, it also lacks the standout moments that would make it memorable. Rhymefest pays tribute to iconic Black writers James Baldwin and Nikki Giovanni, transforming an iconic conversation between the two into a full-length musical composition. The concept is intriguing, offering a poignant commentary on contemporary society.

However, the execution falls short in some aspects. Clocking in at just over 30 minutes, the project lacks substance, and the instrumentals, though easy listening, border on blandness. That said, Rhymefest’s skill as a wordsmith and lyricist shines through, and the guest features hold their own. Yet, despite these strengths, the album leaves a lingering sense that something is missing, preventing it from reaching its full potential.

Release date: February 9, 2024.

1999 WRITE THE FUTURE - hella (˃̣̣̥╭╮˂̣̣̥) ✧ ♡ ‧º·˚

The anticipated debut album hella (˃̣̣̥╭╮˂̣̣̥) ✧ ♡ ‧º·˚ from the 88rising collective 1999 WRITE THE FUTURE is stacked with an all-star lineup. Drawing from the nostalgia of 88rising leader Sean Miyashiro’s Northern California roots, the album’s playful stylization in both its title and song names captures the essence of the region. With a diverse blend of Hip Hop, jazz, R&B, and funk, hella is a genre-defying concoction that’s sure to resonate with music listeners across the board.

Release date: February 2, 2024.

Reef The Lost Cauze - The Triumphant

Philadelphia rapper Reef the Lost Cauze may be best known for his membership in Juju Mob and Army Of The Pharaohs. Still, he has also established a solid solo catalog, starting with his debut LP Feast Or Famine in 2005. The Triumphant serves as the follow-up to 2018’s The Majestic, and it’s another strong addition to his repertoire. Reef once again presents himself as a skilled emcee with a commanding voice and sharp pen game. Producer Caliph-NOW crafts beats that alternate between hard-hitting boom-bap and more melodic tones, all with an underlying grit that keeps the sound firmly underground. The Triumphant is a dope listen with plenty of standout moments.

Release date: February 2, 2024.

Forever Pavot & XP The Marxman - Forever XP

Forever Pavot, a multi-genre producer hailing from Paris, France, joins forces with Los Angeles rapper, producer, and street activist XP The Marxman for Forever XP, and their collaboration proves to be a potent one. Forever Pavot’s beats, fused with live instrumentation, complement XP’s raspy voice and smooth flows seamlessly. With plenty of replay value, this is a project worth diving into.

Release date: February 2, 2024.

WateRR & Wavy Da Ghawd - Washed Ashore

Chicago’s Waterr has been on a roll with a string of strong releases in recent times. Both last year’s ALMIGHTY and Compendium Of Arcanum earned spots on our 2023 honorable mentions list, and his latest project, Washed Ashore, continues this streak of quality projects. A collaboration with Brooklyn-based producer Wavy Da Ghawd, the album showcases Waterr’s versatility and his knack for syncing with his beatmakers.

Wavy Da Ghawd’s boom-bap beats set a dark and brooding tone, perfectly complementing Waterr’s bars. Clocking in at close to 50 minutes, the album offers a refreshing departure from the trend of shorter projects so prevalent in today’s Hip Hop landscape. Washed Ashore delivers the kind of underground Hip Hop we appreciate and enjoy.

Release date: February 1, 2024.

Analog Suspects - The Ripple Effect

R.A.P. Ferreira & Fumitake Tamura - The First Fist To Make Contact When We Dap

R.A.P. Ferreira, also known as Milo, is one of the game’s most inventive wordsmiths. On the short but sweet The First Fist To Make Contact When We Dap he serves up a heady mix of abstract and philosophical content, offering listeners plenty to dissect. Linking up with Japanese producer Fumitake Tamura, known for his prowess in ambient and glitch sounds, proves to be a triumph, the two blending the vibes of jazz rap with glitch elements in a compelling way. If you’re part of the left-field crowd, this joint is a mandatory spin – a testament to Ferreira’s innovation and Tamura’s sonic finesse.

Release date: January 26, 2024.

Vic Spencer x Original Super Legend - Be Double Clip Tight

Prolific Chicago-based emcee Vic Spencer rarely disappoints, and Be Double Clip Tight is another solid addition to his ever-expanding catalog. We prefer his Spencer For Higher and Psychological Cheat Sheet series, but this project is worth a listen as well.

Release date: January 19, 2024.

Hus Kingpin & 9th Wonder - The Supergoat

Strong performances by New York underground veteran Hus Kingpin and guests Roscoe P Coldchain, The Musalini, SmooVth, Sweata, and Fredro Starr, over stylish instrumentals crafted by iconic producer 9th Wonder. Too short at a mere 31 minutes, but a must-listen anyway. Up there with Cocaine Beach (2017), End Of A Decade (2020), and PORTISHUS (2021) as one of Hus Kingpin’s best projects to date.

Release date: January 15, 2024.

Release date: January 15, 2024.

OLDBOY & Sekwence - Good Guys Don't Wear White

Greensboro native and producer OLDBOY joins forces with Alabama rapper Sekwence for their collaborative LP, Good Guys Don’t Wear White. Sekwence’s distinctive hoarse voice, marked by an extreme rasp, might not be the easiest to listen to. Fortunately, the project’s appeal is largely carried by OLDBOY’s dope instrumentals. Additionally, guest appearances from rappers like Blu and Sleep Sinatra inject much-needed variation. Despite its shortcomings, Good Guys Don’t Wear White is well worth a listen.

Release date: January 12, 2024.

Vino La Mano - No Quarter

Ending a brief hiatus, Vino La Mano, a Black Soprano Family artist from Corpus Christi, Texas, makes a comeback with No Quarter, produced by The Soul Monsters. While the polished beats and streetwise raps offering a slice of life may lean towards the generic, No Quarter holds enough appeal to merit a spin or two.

Release date: January 12, 2024.

Clever 1 & Lord Beatjitzu - Master Sip, Legendary Teacher of Bruce Lo, Da First Drunken

“Introducing Master Sip, Legendary Teacher Of Bruce Lo, Da First Drunken. It is illuminating one of the many chambers of their Drunken Fly Chi style, the martial arts mind states of Clever 1 and Lord Beatjitzu combining as the “Fly Chi School Of Da Drunken Artz”. The duo pops the listener in the face with vicious, bloody Nunchuck Lyrics over high-velocity, swift kick-in-the-chest production. With these seasoned masters of their perspective arts, they form a powerful, unstoppable combo and truly take no prisoners in this Action-Packed sophomore foray. It’s a pure Saturday morning Kung Fu sound theater where Wing Chun enters the world of Drunken Fist on Wax. Beware as you enter the Dojo and watch your step!”

The combination of bars by Clever 1 and beats by Lord Beatjitzu results in an interesting little underground project. At mere seconds over 30 minutes, it merits inclusion here, but it can hardly be called a proper full-length album, of course. Still, worth the time of anybody who can’t get enough of that raw underground Hip Hop sound.

Release date: January 12, 2024.

21 Savage - american dream

Although not typically inclined towards trap and pop-rap, 21 Savage’s i am > i was (2018) and Savage Mode II (2020) deserved our appreciation when they dropped. His latest venture, american dream, offers a decent listen with lively melodies, solid production, and even some listen-worthy bars. Tracks like “letter to my brudda” and “dark days” add depth, while harder-hitting tunes like “redrum” stand out. The middle section falters here and there with dumb lyrics and weaker tracks like “pop ur sh*t”. Metro Boomin’s production is on the ‘safe’ side, but the beats consistently hit, and 21 Savage maintains his status as one of the better-skilled rappers in this trap generation. While not surpassing i am > i was and Savage Mode IIamerican dream is a decent addition to 21 Savage’s catalog and the trap genre.

Release date: January 12, 2024.

Bruiser Wolf - My Story Got Stories

Bruiser Wolf - My Story Got Stories

Much like his Bruiser Brigade counterpart Danny Brown, Detroit rapper Bruiser Wolf flexes a vocal style that may be an acquired taste. His distinct flow and delivery, reminiscent of E-40’s style turned up to ten, require some acclimatization, and the enjoyment of this album hinges on whether you can vibe with it. We appreciate My Story Got Stories much like we did with Bruiser Wolf’s debut album, Dope Game Stupid, released in 2021. For us, Dope Game Stupid edges ahead slightly, boasting better humor and punchlines. While his flows remain unique and entertaining, the lyrics on this project feel slightly less eccentric than on the last album, resulting in a slightly less enjoyable listening experience. Still a commendable effort though.

Release date: January 12, 2024.

Kid Cudi - INSANO

Kid Cudi serves up a passable pop-rap experience with INSANO. Although it doesn’t come close to reaching the heights of his standout MOTM series, especially the first two, it manages to hold its own. The album, however, stretches itself thin with excess length, lacking the depth expected and featuring some noticeable filler and throwaway tracks. Cudi’s potential as a compelling and unique artist occasionally surfaces, but on INSANO, he seems overly focused on connecting with the mainstream trap audience instead of showcasing his expressive and artistic best. Despite its drawbacks, Kid Cudi’s distinctive touch still shines through in moments on this project.

Release date: January 12, 2024.

iLL Sugi x Pruven - Black Pyramid

Bronx-by-way-of-Connecticut emcee Pruven delivers thought-provoking lyrics over a selection of fire beats crafted by producer iLL Sug. Pruven has been grinding as an independent artist for some time, with a collection of dope projects under his belt. Be sure to explore other full-lengths like 1st Words: Earn Everything (2010), Designed Growth Destiny (2013), Reach Surroundings (2017), and our personal favorite, Clandestine Rituals (2020), if you enjoy this one.

Pruven’s lyrical style blends elements of Killah Priest and billy woods, making him a must-listen for fans of either artist. While Black Pyramid may not be his best work, it’s still well worth your time and attention.

Release date: January 7, 2024.

Bumpy Knuckles & OG Jazzo - Level Up

Bumpy Knuckles & OG Jazzo - Level Up

Active in the game since the mid-80s, Freddie Foxxx, also known as Bumpy Knuckles, is a Hip Hop icon. His tale in Hip Hop goes back to 1986 when Foxxx was set to meet with Eric B., who was on the lookout for a rapper to team up with. Foxxx missed the meeting, leading Eric B. to join forces with an emcee named Rakim, forming the iconic duo Eric B. and Rakim. Despite not succeeding in building a discography that fully reflects his status, Freddie Foxxx’s unwavering skill and authenticity have earned him lasting respect in the industry.

His collaboration with Jazzo in 2024 underscores that Bumpy Knuckles is still a relevant force. The straightforward boom-bap beats, rooted in the ’90s, provide a perfect backdrop for Bumpy Knuckles’ gritty flows and bars. Level Up is a dope little project, the main drawback being its brevity at just over 30 minutes.

Release date: January 7, 2024.

LuGhz - ThE LuGhz ExPeRiEnCe

The LuGhz Experience is a dope underground project from Queens-based British/Nigerian/American emcee LuGhz. With 17 tracks and an hour of runtime, The God That Sins is a well-rounded and fully realized piece of music, with thought-provoking lyrical content and appealing instrumentals. Available on Bandcamp, a portion of each sale supports the Hip Hop For Change non-profit which educates youth in the Bay Area, LA, and across the country about the history and elements of Hip Hop.

Release date: January 4, 2024.

The Musalini & 9th Wonder - Uptown Bandits 2

Uptown Bandits 2 marks yet another strong addition to The Musalini’s discography, but it also treads familiar territory. Since his debut in 2019, The Musalini has been on a prolific streak, consistently releasing projects that showcase his flair for pimped-out rhymes and beats to match. In this latest installment, the production duties once again fall into the capable hands of Jamla’s boss 9th Wonder. While it may follow The Musalini’s tried-and-tested formula, the familiarity of his style doesn’t take away from the overall solid experience that Uptown Bandits 2 brings to the table.
