The Light Podcast: Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five

New episode of The Light!

Detrone, John L, and Scott pay homage to one of the most iconic groups of all time in Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five and discuss what they meant to the Hip Hop game. Despite Flash’s innovation on the turntables and the cohesiveness between Melle Mel, Kid Creole, Scorpio, Rahiem, and Cowboy – they were shrouded in controversy and internal discontent but that didn’t stop them from coming together at Sugar Hill Records for the briefest of moments to help lay the groundwork for that classic sound still heavily sampled today.

Grandmaster Melle Mel was critical to he movement that pioneered the MC takeover as spotlight shifted away from the DJ for the first time and placed the mic right up front – on wax AND in the nightclub. His monumental verses on the classic record Beat Street helped solidify his place in history as an emcee way ahead of his time.
